TAME BIMNGGRDS.
low a Cleve1aud Lady Won the Cone
dence of Seven P'retty Songsters.
Some years ago, before Mirs. Stowo
iad written the story of "IIm, the Son
>f Bug," a lady living in Cleveland
yroved that these dainty bits of color
d light can be tamed. by love.
Sitting at her chamber~ window, she
saw the birds flying back and forth with
>its of moss and drie~d grass in their
ils, and, herself unseen, she watched
he building of their nest. A trumpet
4ino covered one side of the house, and
.t was in this that they chose the site
for their home. It may have been while
ooking at the view tromn their dwelling
that they found a sugar and honey bank
yn the window ledge. They evidently
iked that, for they boldly tasted, not
ninding 3Ir3, B.'s preseaco in the least.
Every day they foun~d their sugar in
he same place, and 3rs. B. there too.
She would talk softly and lovingly to
hem, and they began to think she must
,e an excellent giant. When she gave
hem sugar in her hand they would fly
o it, and eat it, and after a few weeks
he could give them honey from her
They grew so tame that they felt free
o indulge their natural curiosity in re
ard to the belongings of her room.
irds are very curious little creatures,
Ld, when net afraid, will examine
wcry thing they see.
During these weeks the mother bird
2ad been sitting on her nest, and had
atched five wee birdies. Then there
was great scarrying albout to feed those
ve hungry bodie.g. The sugar bank
was more drawn upon than ever; but it
vas better than some, because it never
Eailed.
Birds grow fast, ani it was not long
ttil the mother and father birds felt it
safe to take their little flock on a visit
to their good friend.
Do you not suppose she was happy
when the seven came flying into her
r'oom, up to her lips and all about her,
showing their trust and love of her?
The young ones were never wild. They
::ould be taken in the hand, and would
Ry there of their own accord.
If AMrs. 13, had friends in the room the
birds were shy, and would not come in;
but persons standing at the door could
see them, and many did. Seven hhm
ming birds, tame encugh to come to one,
sat froni one's mouth, examine what one
holds, are unusual crnough to make one
wish to see them. Through all the sum
mer they continued to show their dainty
vays to their tamer, and she rejoiced in
their freedom.-Santa Claus.
Character and thze Face.
Children speak of "making faces"
at one another, when they twist their
eatures into an expression of their
feelings of disgust, or scorn, or hatred.
This kind of face-making is an act of
the will; but there is a steady making
of faces by the character which is in
voluntary, and yet which has more en
luring results than the other. Day and
night the character is chiseling away
at the features of every face, and men
and women show to others what kind of
face-making is going on in their
natures. i we would have better-look
ing faces, we moust see to it that bet
ter work is done by our face-making
characters.-S. S. Times.
Tree-P1;,.ntinlg by the Ancient::.
The custom ci planting trees, which
is now made popular in this coutry by
legislation, has been practiced by other
nations for age s. The Aztecs were ac
customed to plant a tree on the ove -ion
of the birth of a child, the tree ben
given the same nan.e as the chil-,, and
it is said that the Mlexican Ind2ians,
when the moon is full, still plant trees
in the same manner. In some parts of
Germany it is the practice at Whitsun
tide for the people to assemble on the
top of the Rearest mountain to hail the
rising sun with singing, and after this
ach member of the family sets out his
or her own tree.-Christian at Work.

SEED IRISH POTATOES NOW IN STORE.
We think we have the best Irish Potato that grows. We have tried them
and have questioned many others who have also grown them. The verdict is,
they are the best. Potato nearly round, skin red, meat white and cooks dry;
earlier than the Early Rose; is more productive and keeps well. Try them
and give us your opinion. Respectfully,

One Ton Cotton Seed Meal
For 375 Lbs, Middling Cotton, Payable in the Fall.
This is the offer we are now making, and we desire to call the attention of
farmers to the cheapness ot Cotton Seed Meal at present as compared with
commercial fertilizers. Taking the Clemson College valuation of ammonia
at 13c. and 15c. per lb., respectively, in cotton seed meal and in mixed
fertilizers, phosphoric acid at 5c. and potash at 5c. per lb., we have the fol
lowing:
Cotton Seed Meal-Analysis, 8i per cent ammonia, 2& per cent phos.
acid, 13 pet cent potash. Commercial value at (;barleston with.
freight to Winnsboro...............----.----------.---.-29.20
Commercial Pertilizers-Analysis, S per cent ammonia, 8 per cent phos
acid, 15 per cent potash. Value at Winnabero.. ...............21.40
The above shows a difference of $7.80 per ton in favor of cotton seed
meal over high grade fertilizers, and yet we are selling cotton seed meal for
less thani you can buy standard fertilzELDOLrsETLIE.O
