LOCAL INTELLIGENCE
Thursday, March 2. a
-The chain gang now has nine in it. C
-'Tis said we may have some good r
local base-ball this season. .
-The bridge in front of Mr. A.
Williford's livery stable is being re- if
paired. f<
-Mrs. Martin is improving the ap- 5
pearance of her place by having her S
fencing painted.
-The young children will give a
picnic at Flat Rock on Saturday, the
weather permitting. .
-NOW's the time to paint your
b
fence. If you can't get anybody else r
to paint it do so yourself.
-There are rumors of approaching j'
marriages in which some of our young
people will play leading parts. V

-Mr. C. S. O'Neil gave a very r
pleasant entertainment to his friends
among the young people Wednesday
evening.
-The grand jury of Lancaster 0
county have recommended a wind b
mill and tank for use at the jail in t
Lancaster.
-The north-bound mail is now car
ried by the 6.01 "Bob-tail " The Yes
tibule continues to carry the south
bound mail.
-Mr. Thomas Anderson, we are
sorry t state is quite unwell at his
home. He has never recovered from
the grippe, he thinks.
Messrs. T. 11. Ketcbin, E. B. Rags
.dale, T. P. Mitchell and Hayne Mc
.Meekin attended the conference in o
Ce!umbia as representatives from Fair- s<
field.
-The bird season is over the 31st Y
inst. A great many have been killed
this season and unless the coming u
summer is especially favorable to
breeding the supply will be limited for a:
next autumn and winter.
-The County Board of Equaliza- Ii
tion met Tuesday and heard the com- i
plaints of those whose returns had
been raised. Some returns were put
back to the Auditor's valuation but
others were left at increased valuation. (
put upon them by the board.
-We should like to see the band
reorganized. The band stand has
been a useless ornament for some
- ears now, and during the coming i
summer we should be pleased to see it
occupied by as entertaining a musical
aggregation as that of '89-'90.

-The farmers are making use of the
good weather which followed the ex
tremely bad weather about two weeks
ago. The land is being turned over at
a great rate. The bell cord is being p
pulled everywhere you go, and the b
firmers are working with a will. ~tl
-The sugar cane which came to
Mr. J. M. Beaty recently has all been
distributed, and we understand is
planted. We await with interest the
outcome of this crop. There can be IF
but little doubt, however, that it will !n:
be a vast improvement on the sorghum cl
cane generally planted in this country.
-One of the best suburban farms
near Winnsboro is that of Mr. W. H.
Flenniken. An inspection of his place
shows a thorough preparation. In
spite of the bad weather he has suc
hceeded in preparing a number of acresd
in grain. He has used extra manure
and preparation to make up for the 4
lateness in the season. c
-Many gardeners in town are taking ai
advantage of the fine weather to piant
their gardens. The cold and wet t
weather have so delayed these opera- ci
tions that early -vegetables will be an aI
impossibility, but with fast working S
there may still be fine gardens. Irish
potatoes, which should have been le
planted about the first of February, e:
are being planted, but the:: will be as c'
early as the crop in the truck gardens ~

A reporter for THE NEWS AND

T. C. Caldwell, chairman of the Board
f Trastees, in reference to the rumor
hat children had stopped because they
were required to pay tuition fees for
,he common school braaches.
IHae the Board of Trustees been

A b regular charges for tuition at
fmonu Zion?
"No, Sir. We have had no notice
)f irregular charges and have no idea
,hat there are any."
What has been the practice or rule
n reference to the payment of tuition,
hat is, who are required to pay?
"The general rule is that all students
aking branches not prescribed by the
aw are required to pay tuition fees.
[n other words we have a common
chool course and a collegiate course.
[n the collegiate department, a fee of
$2 to $3 per month has been charged."
Do you know of any pupils who
iave been forced to stop because
harges were made for common school
tudics?
"No, Sir, there have been none."
Will there be any trouble in running
he school for the full nine months
his session? "No."
"I will state," said Mr. Caldwell,
urther, "that no pupil has ever been
orced to stop even in the c.llegiate de

>ay the tuition. We have alloyed
hem to continue when they were

One Ton Cotton Seed Meal
B'er 375 Lbs. Milddlig Cotton, Payabl, in the Fall.
This is the offer we are now making, and we desire to call the attention of --~
armers to the cheapness of Cotton Seed Meal at present as compared with
ommercial fertilizers. Taking the Clemson College valuation of ammonia
,t . and 15c. per lb., respectively, in cotton seed meal and in mixed
ertilizers, phosphoric acid at 5c. and potash at 5c. per lb., we have the fol
awing:
Cotton Seed Heal-Analysis, 8i per cent ammonia, 24 per cent phos.
acid, 15 pet cent potash. Commercial value at Charleston with
freight to Winnsboro..........................------------$29.20
Commercial Fertilizers--Analysis, 3 per cent ammonia, 8 per cent phos.
acid, 15 per cent potash. Value at Winnsboro.. ...............$21.40
The above shows a difference of $7.80 per ton in favor of cotton seed
ieal over high grade fertilizerE, and yet we are selling cotton seed meai for
