Is it possible that Cal Caughman has
not been heard from since Chrismas?
Is it generally realized that at last
Dr. William Stokes has a fighting
chance of getting to Congress?
Wz may depend that the Monroe
doctrine will be enforced against Eng
land as rigidly as against any other
nation.
CUBAN war news is as unreliable as
that from the orien al seat of war, and
this with Cuba almost in sight from
our shores.
Lt Hm7e CHANG, of much recent
notoriety, is likely to loe his life, in
addition to the peacock feathers and
other insignia recently lost.
AN exchange in supporting Irby for
re-election says he has done his best.
This prompts another to remark that
this alone is ample reason for his stay
ing at home.
Tha death of young Bahen the foot
ball player, whose spine was wrenched
six months since in a game, may cause
a temporary check in the enthusiasm
for this game, but it will hardly affect
its popularity. The game has come to
stay.__________
McKILET, it is said, wishes to form
a Republican party South. He will
omit the force bill and tthe negro and
make:the-fight on the tariff question.
Redis ahead of him as yet, with less
oftariff and man of same means as his
platform.
Jaws's alliance with Russia puts a
serious face upon the matter of check
ing the latters encroachmaent upon
England's possessions in Asia Minor.
Col. Burnaby long since said 'twas
only a matter of time and Russia and
England would be at war over this
question.
GOVEaNOR TriLiN's recent anew
party" interview was merely a repeti

Tillman is playing for an important
position in this party he speaks of.
But not having been "born great" we
will be psardoned tor haiving doubts as
to whether he will ever hare "great

THE Confederate Veterans reunion
at Houston, Texas, promises to be an
enjgyable affiir. The State and na
Ie - tonal troops will also encamp there
during the occasion. We are in re
ceipt ot a circular setting forth the
manoy pleasures of this reunioni and
encampment, and giving railroad and
ticket information. On May 20 we
should be in H~ouston to participate in
what wi,11 un:loubtedly be a p1lasant

TEE press dispatches tell of the
final running down of a lie told in
regard to the capture of Jefferson
Davis thirty years ago. The truth of
the matter is told by the officer who
omnanded the capturing party. The
officer need hardly have been so zeal
ously thirty years after the occurrence
thai the matter be set right. Long
ago the truth of the matter was known
to every one who wished to know it,
and those who did not then admit it,
will hardly do so now.
- Tmis has been a year of record
breaking among the worlds legIslative
bodies. The German Reichstag re

of Great Britian a sort of unknown

the legislature of North Carolinai vot

TPa. Charlotto Obserrer hzas had its

IN MEMORIAM,
When the old, filled with years and
infirmities, are called aiway, we may
say, IL is well, but when the young
are stricken suddenly down, torn from
a life devoted to husband, children
and frienis hew our hearts, our human
heartx, ieh-el and we cry ont in an
guish, Why ii it?
Thus has pass d a-vav Cora Watts,
daughter <,f Cpt. Irby, aid wife of
Ja. S. L% lke, in the : loom of womtan
hool. Wi;itou a momne !.t's warnin
she was called to cross the dai k river,
and so sndden- was the blow that it
was almost impossible to realize that
she had left her dear ones.
Mrs. Lyles was of a retiring dispo
sition and only those most inti:nately
associated with her conid estimate her
trun worth. In all the relations of
life she was most devoted, and her
watchword was Duty, and her greatest
ambition and joy seemeil to be to min
ister to her dear one,. If she erred
in this regard, it was in being too for
getful of self. Nobly elevated above
the slightest propensity to judge her
fellow beings unkindly, "e can most
truthfully say, that during an inti
mE.cy of many years we never heard
an unkind or uncharitable word fall
from her lips. Her nanuers were the
perfection of p.sce and politeness, the
politeness prompted by a true, warm
heart, and she always knew what to
say and what to leave unsaid. 9Judge
not that ye be not jndged" seemed to
guide her in her inlercourse with
others.
This blow fails most heavilv upon
father, mother, husband, children and
friends, but we must uot forget that
God knows best and will in His own
good time permit her sorro wing friends
ti understand what now seems a mys
terious dispensation.
No one can estimate the loss to her
immediate family, and our heart is fa :1
for thelmotherless little ones with the
sunlight in their hair.
01 dearest Cora, the flowers this
spring
Will not smile as they used to smile,
When we stood and watched each ten
der thing
As it strove to teach ua, whisp 3ritig,
In th t soft spring air awhile.
0! dearest Cera, the after glow
Will not shine as it used to shine,
Whea we sto:d in the dusky gloom
below
And watched the heavenly fires go
Out beyond the pine.
0! dearest Cora, so long in the ground,
How can we turn to go?
How can we move from the lilied
mound;
This earthen tenL which our treasure
has fonnd;
How can we leave yon so?
Yet, dearest Cora, afar in the skies,
Ttwu art happy and wise to-day,
In all God's wonderful mysteries
Which have baflled the seeking sage's
ev es
Along the c~sntaries way.
Oar dearest Cora, afar in the skies,
And yet se near, so near
That we ctn catch the light in thine
eyes,
And the tone in thy voice so low and
wise,
If we but stoop to hea--.
Ah! deareat Cara-so sweetly necar,
Never to be apart,
For memories ten:der, and more than
dear,
Come !rooping ever, folding thee here
Ciose, close within the heart.
