Not only the members of the Baptist Churches here and at Ridgeway but the whole community will be glad to know that Rev.. Jabez Ferris has de clined the call extended to him from the Baptist Church at Camden. Mr. Ferris has frequently received calls from other places, anwl his congre gation are to be congratulated that they have been able to retain him. Ghildren Cry for Pitcher's Castoria. goy pas This Strike You? The people of Ridgeway and Winns boro are constantly wanting to com municate with each other on business, and Ridgeway wants a telephone line to Winnsboro. This would be ;a con venience to the business men of both places, and we believe that it would pay to organize a joint stock company for the purpose. Branch offices will be located at Simpson's and Rockton. Ridgeway is going to ru a line to Mr. J. f. Harrison's in Longtown, Sand, of course, this line would be con neccted with the Winnsboro and Ridge way line so that we would have direct cormunaication with Longtown. Mr. E. C. Heins is agitating the subject in Ridgeway, and he tells us that his -o~ .will subscribe one hundred dollars. He says that it would not .require a capital stock of more than thrce hundred dollars. It is probable that Simpson's and Ro~ckton would take a few shares. A small fee could be charged for usimng the 'phone and yme bNieve that a good dividend would ne paid on the investment. WVe weald like .to knov what the people of -Winnsboro think about it. At ten dollars a sh'tre, it seems as if there ought to be very little trouble in gftting up the capital stock. We hear that there is a line between Black stocks and Chester, and Mr. WV. M. raorick has a private line between Woodwards and mlackstocki, and he could be induced to run his lIne down to White Oak. We are informed that Mr. T. G. Patrick is anxious to con nect with Winnsboro by a line. If all of this was done, direct communi cation between Longtown and Chester could be easily arranged. Pints $1.00. Winnsboro Drug Store. KILLED HIMSELF UNDER ARREST. The community was shocked to hear of the death of Mr. Thomas Hoffman at Blythewood on Wednesday evening. Sheriff Ellison went down Wednesday to arrest him under a warrant charg ing him with embezzling $57 from the Southern Express Company, at Carl ton, Ga. iHe had been employed there ts telegraph ope, ator and agent of the Southern Express Company, and in some way got short in his account-. The sheriff in Georgia came over after him, and get Mr. Ellison to make tihe arrest. Mr. Hoffman made io re sistance whatever. While the Sheriff had him in the depot at Blythewood waiting for the north-bound train, Mr. Hoffman stepped behind the rail ings or counter, and having procurt t a pistol in some way shot himself through the heart. He had his back to the Sheriff, standing in between the Sheriff and the agent, wh* was writing at his desk with his back to Mr. Hoffman. No one was in the room except the Sheriff and the agent, and both were startled at the sound of the pistol. He died within five minutes after he was shot. We understand that Mr. Hoffman had offered to pay his shortage, but a ettlement was declined. We heard from a reliable gentleman that Mr. Hoffmau told him last fall that he had got short in his accounts in some way that he (Hoffman) could not explain. [t s--ens that if he offered to make ,ood a shortage that occurred in a way that ho could not explain it should have been accepted by the company. Chidren Cry for Pitcher's Castora. HE IS AFRAID OF THEM. Mr Editor: Now that the great con erence is near at hand, I am wonder ing what the conservative3, tbat are Woing to take part in that body, will 1o; how they will feel among those who have been backing up and sup porting the fraudulent government we ae had the last four years. I hope hey will not go into the trap that is being set for them. Will they go into what is called a Democratic primary? [ hope not I for one will never vote in that trap. It may be well for the ouservatives to go and hear what sort t compromise is to be proposed. I ae heard one of the wisest statesmen in Fairfield county atd one of the purest Jeffersonian Democrats say that that the conservatives were standing mt for principle, for a government of bhe people, for the people, and by the people, and they could not, without stltifying themselves, -go into a com promise with those who for the last tour years have been upholding a gov ernment of Tillman, for Tillman, and by Tillman. And this is all there has been of it. If the conservatives are trapped into a primary, they ought to be disfran hised during life. The coming con ention to form a new constitnution has aiwas s been a hobby with the Till mamnites, and it is intended that the uffrage questionr is to be the point. With the experience we hadl in the last election, where wholesale disfra~nchiise muent was practiced, the conservatives had better lee careful. If they go into [t in a miinority they will be actually elping the fraud, but if they stand off and watch they may be able to elect legates who will give the people ta fi- and honert constitution. Just now it looks to me about like the fable of the fox and the blood sucking flies. When the fox was about to be done t->death a bird offered to drive off the swarm; but the fo.X ftaid, "No, these fies are now abaut satisfied, and the one king bee has about all he wants. If this swarm is driven away a larger Bwarm. headed by forty, is ready to pounce upon mue." Now to drop the fable and come to acts: Tililman and his swarm are about done, but here is a larger or.e ready to devour the fox, that is, the conssrvatives. And they will do it it they don't keep a lookout. I hope no week-kneed couservatives will go into the conerencP. J P'. Shelton, March 20, 1895.
