LOCAL INTELLIGENCE hursday, March 21. ; ; New Advertisements. T. X. L -C. M. Dempsey, Manager Columbia, S. C. Local Urtet' -Mr. A. Williford lost a valuable mule on Wednesday. -Mr. J. F. McMaster's team ran v short distance on Main street latt Friday afternoon, but no serioug damage was done. -Hampton Johnston, colored, wa seriously injured a few days ago bj the dump-car or something falling on him while he was at work on the rail road. -The,excessive rains have prevented the farmers from preparing their land for this year's crop, and we fear that so much rain now means a dry spring and summer. -Mr. R. H. McMaster writes hii father from Fort Sill, 0. T., under date March 15th, that he had reached dat place, having had a cold ride for thirty miles in a stage coach. He i well pleased with his new duties, though he has had no military work to do so far. -A heavy cyclone mus.iave passed over-head on Wednesday morning about 9.30. The clouds becaie so dense that daylight was shut out from the earth. For about fifteen or twenty minutes it was impossibl3 to see in the house how to read, and lamps had to be lighted. On account of the very bad meather, Mr. Bankhead couldn't take his gang out, and the .on'victs had a good:time resting, most of the time in the County Supervisor's office. -The chain gang livabeen working the road from Rockton, and, every evening a large crowd- of boys go -down to the freight'depot and watch curiously for the convicts te march back to, jail. It is a novel sight to most of the boys. Mr.-Bankhead tells us that the convicts say that they pre fer work;ing the roads to lying, up --in jail. -Mr. D. P. Crosby, one of the most energetic and enterprising farmers of our county, has a wind mill and sup plies his house with water by means -.of pipes. The tank and tower are near his residence 'and a - sufficient supply if kept on hand to quench a Ire if discovered in . time. A pipe runs to the lower garden in frouit Which enables the -watering of ptastb when necessary.: Mr. Ci-osby believes in conveniences and has thorn. - -A municipal ticket has been- sent to this office. A great many rumors are anoat now about the extension of the South Bound Road through this county. The pur pose of the extension is to make a short line to New York. The compe tition between the Southern Railway and its allies and the Seaboard has got Fo close that the South Bud wants as straight a line to New York as possible in order to make quick time. Several routes through this count y are discussed. Some say that the road will pass Ridgewvay. Others sawV that *it will go between Blytbewood anid Ridgewar. The tmost reliable infr mation, however, that we can get is that it will pass between Winnsboro and Simpson's and str ike as straight a line as possible f.>r Peay's Ferry. It is said that 't bridge can be built over the river there cheaper than at anyr other point. It is also said that the road will not go three miles etut of . straight line to tap any town no waiter what inducements are offered. This wenld hurt our town considerably, a nd it i< worth looking d-ter. Catarrh Cannot be Cured wit b LOCAL APPLICATIONs, as they tfani n -? reach t he sea!. of the di--ea~e. S. LYLES. BUCKHEAD, S. C., March 14.-Our community was much shocked at the news of the sudden death of Mrs. James S. Lyles, which occurred this morning about 5 o'clock. Mrs. Lyles had been complaining for several weeks, but was not confined to bed all of th6 time, so her friends did not realize the seriousness of her condi tion. She leaves a husband and six children, the youngest but six months old. Our sYmpathies go out to her husband and children in this sad be reavement. Mrs. Lyles was a daugh ter of Capt. S. P. Irby. To her p)a rents, who were unable to be with her during her last hours, we also extend sympathy. L. Jenkinsvile Observations. The village of Jenkinsville is situ- I ated about seventeen miles from Winnsboro and three miles from Alstott. It is a postoffice on the "Heron Line". which runs from Al ston to Monticello, daily. WHITE OAK, S. C., March 19. Farmers have done scarcely anything in farm work, owing to the wet weather. There will be but little s fertilizer used in this section. The t farmers have come to the'- conclusion that they can't use it at the present price of cotton- Gardening is also backward. -. Mr. T. G. Oh ! for the same reason that thousands of others are on the verge of the same sin, or in imme diate danger of insanity, paralysis, idiocy, or some other eually unfortunate result of any nervous afection. He knew he was aflicted with a nervous disorder, but was careless, apparently indifferent to the out come ; or he may have lessened his chances for recovery by treating with physicians who had little or no kn >wledge of such af fections, or by delugi:< himself with worth less so-.called remedies. His case was a sad one, but no worse than that of any other nervous sufferer, who has nervous or sick headche, biliousness, dizziness, irritability,~ melancholy, failing memory, hot fiashes, fainting, sleeplessness, nervous dyspepsia, sexual debility, epilepsy, etc. The same or similar consequences are likely to result to any one who lha any of these advance symptoms of an awful end. Do not hesitate i getting rid of them by intelligent treat ment. Dr. Franklin Miles, the celebrated specialist, has studied nervous diseases over 20 years, and has discsvered the only re liable remedy for them. Thousands of vol untary testimonials prove the virtues of Dr. Miles' Restorative Nervine. Alozo Barker, of clinton. N. Y., writes: "I was so afflicted with extreme nervousness that I was on the verge of insanity. My hands trem bled so that I could scarcely feed myself. I used twelve bottles of Dr. Miles' Restorative Nervino and was cured. It is with pleasare I recommend this wonderful remedy for nervous troubles." "I had been a great sufferer from chronic headache until I began. about four months ago, to use Dr. Milcs' Restorative Nervine and Pills since which time I have not had a headache. Several of my friends are using Dr. Miles' Rem edies, and find therm, as I did, to be more than you claim for them. "-Mrs. Mary Kister, Lot Angeles, Cal. w. H. Capwell, editor Tribune. Plymouth. Pa., writes : "My wife was cured of sick headache ol many, years' standing by the use of Dr. Miles' Restorative Nervine.' She has recommended it tc tier friends, and they-all praise it hisghly." This has doubtless been the most dis agreeable winter we've expericnced in years, both as regards cold weather and rain especially. No ploughing scarely has been done yet, and front present indications none will be done soon. The ground is so wet, that were it to fair off now, it would be a week liefore it would be dry enough to plough. The farmers have been busying themselves during the rainy weather clearing land, r-epairing fences, etc. The oat crop as a general rule was killed by the cold weather. Spring oats are up and are looking nicely. Wheat is looking well con idering the severe winter. There will not be near as much commercial fertilizers used irf this section this year as there was last year. I think the farmers of this section will strive to make their own supplies this year. Your correspondent having occasion to visit the Capital City went down on Wednesday. We found the roads pretty sloppy and the creeks up con siderably, two of them, especially. yhey should have bridges across them 3o as to facilitate travel. The most of the land seen enroute is so poor that it ooks as if it would scarcely sprout :ow peas. Columbia is building up wronderfnily of late; new buildings are oin~ up on all sides. While in the wty 1 vas a guest at the hospitable m .>f Mr. L T. Wilds, a former itizen of Longtown, who has moved :o the capital city, and was entertained -ight royally by him. We found Mr. Wilds the same progressive, enter )rising citizen as of yore. He has urchased a lot of land near the city _or which heoave nine dollars per tere, and is selling it readily for forty lollars per acre. He certainly has the )est land I saw while away. We pro oses going into pecan culture and is naking preparations for planting a arge grove. It would be a good idea 'or some of our citizens to try pecan ulture, as there is big money in it, Then the trees once get started to earing. I would also suggest that Ninusboro would follow Columbia's xample in factory building. Colum ia with her factories, mills, etc., ives employment to hundreds of eople, and keeps her money at home. qow why can't Winnsboro do the ame? ..The salvation of the South lepends upon the establishment -of nills and factories to manufacture ts own at home.
