Thurs4ay, March'21, ; ; ; 895 Wa have a -notion that woman suffrage in this state will move even slo wer than the effort to allow divorces. THERE is generally supposed to fall during the year an average quantity of rain. We may cor.fdently look for a long dry spell if this holds true in '95. S-ANTA.RNE WILsoN atrikei as as being a pious frawd. He is the only one a. yet who ha) -taken active stepi to destroy planz of peace. He may be working his own destruction unwit tinigly. ADjuTANT WATTs says the depai t ment ofc'als seemed to think him quite a young man to be Adjalant and Inspector General of S,>u h Carolina. General Watts is young enough to be susceptible to Littery evidently. THE State should certainiy have a naval reqerve and with proper effort cm obtain the use of one of the gov eriment ships. 'The reserve of North Carolina is in excellent condition and has more than a local reputation. AGovznNOR PE'' TURNET, of Tennes se,.wito once said when he heard of a report of his death, "I knew it was a lie-the minute I heard it," is evidently as disinclined e admit Ciay Evans' election as be as the report of his death. THE tw hundred negroes who left Savannah uesday for Liberia will and it hardr to return to their old homes thnit -they had emigrated west and fos d themselves displeased. Thiere is said to ite a Liberia craze all over the South at present among the negroes. THE Charlotte Observer suggests that while some,. of our owa zealous patriots are demanding an apology from Spain, others have murdered Italian miners and shot down an English subject. The reparation we taay be called upon to make for th ase outrages is lost sight of. THE Netws and Courier hiils with de light the building of a knitting mill at Cheraw, S. U., and urges upon other -to was the importance cf turning their attention to this industry. Winns boro, we trustr Will in the near future give odr Charleston contemporary the opportunity for further congratulation. TxE authorities are evidently in no -hurry to carry the dispensar y law to .the Supreme Court. And wisely so we suspect, for, though it is the pro duction of Evans, a clever enough lawyer, and of Tillmnan, a man whose intuitive sense on this question, he himself ranks far above Simenton's or Goff's legal learning, it will surely not stand a test. SPin will doubtless make all due apologies to this country for the recent Alliana affair. And this she seems to have determined to do at her own sweet leisure, and after an enquiry into the Affair as is proper. Mr. Whitney at Naples, Mr. Dana and a host of others in this country will find it unprofitable and hardly apt to hasten Spain's a.:tion by getting into a passion about "Old Glory," the "Nation's IHonor," etc ,-etc. How do our North Carolina friends like the change they have gotten in "the existing state of affairs" politi cally? Hew do they like the exchange of Butler and Pritchard for Ransom and Jarvis? How will they endure Populist judges, and the general over throw of everything in general? We wonder! And yet they leaned, noet a few of them, towards a like over throw in their sister -State. Tillman and Irby as seen through their eyes were surely not the bad fellows we painted them Why so much disgust at the exchange of Irby for Hampton and Tillman fo.r Butler? "Good Demo erats all," they said, and may be Re form was really needed In their Douglass Legialature their Republican Seses, and Populist judge., they wil~*ffer oven more than we have deE The Spartauburg Herald is rigt The man who moved there to escape Tiilmanism had better move back at once.. Editor: Surely the a:rivAl of oar c unty p iper i< a pleasing break nt the ui .ntny of onr hum-drum ives. We not.ize a perceptible talling -ff in the communic'ttions of many ,ho fornerly wrote with s me degree >f regularity. We plead guiltj of this >ffence, and promise amendment. February '95 will be long remem )ered as the coldest kn'>wn in years, Lnd the appellation of "Sunny South, as surely a misnomet. Since the eather moderated, we have had rain, -ain rain, and all farm work is greatly etarted. Farmers are chronic grumb ers, bat we hope and believe that the renerality of them are in better shape ban for many years. True, cotton is amentably low, yet we guarantee that ess corn has been bought in this sec ion of the county, so far, than any year since Sherman's "inarch to the sea." Then there seems to be a de termination to raise hogs, and with plenty of bread and meat, we can surely manage to buy other necessaries, even if cotton is only four cents. So far Rock Creek Church is without a pastor this year. All seem to regret that the sttingency of the times cause it impracticable to retain Mr. Estes. Mr. E. has the esteem of all, and is emphatically a refined gentleman. Not only is he beloved by members of his own church, but all who have been thrown in contact with him will ever remember him with pleasure. If the face is an index of the heart be evolence is one of Mr. E.'s distin guishing characteristics, and we heartily wish him prosperity and happiness through life. It was with sincere regret that we noticed the 1.>ss, by fire, of the Wallace homestead. The loss of a home is always to be deplored, but especially is this true of a family homestead. Then how lamentab'e V) have bedding, furniture, etc., swept away these truly hard times, for money is scarce. Our dear friend and ductor, 11. W. Owens, continues very ill. Truly he has given hi's life to his profession. He was never known to refu'e to re spon;d to a call, ever. when he Lad no expectation of remuneration. We have seen him ride in burning sans aid bitter winds, ntterly oblivious of h's own health. We trust all realize and appreciate his noble lite-work. We earnestly hope he may yet recover, yet fear the worbt. The Pine Grove Sch'>ol will soon close, much to oar regret. Not only do we commiserate the children, who will be without a teacher until next fall, but when we remember h)w soon Miss Thornwell wil: leave the neigh borhood, we experience a sense of personal loss, and doubtless all of her friends will miss her sorely Piquante, affable, charming in the truest accep tation of' the term, we censider her sojourn among us as an oasis in the desert of our isolated lives. She has partially promised to visit Mrs. Ladd "in fruit season," ad we are cheered by the hope of seeinst her again e'er very long. The patrons of the Rock Creek School are much pleased with Miss Richardson, and -speak of' retaining her when the school funds are exhaus ted. Teachers and pupils suffer great injustice by the short school term. Just as the teachers begin to feel en couraged by the interest and progress manifested by papils, the school is out. The Gould Castellane wedding has been the topic of conversation for some weeks. it saddens one to think of the tens of thousands of dollars ex pended in American Beauty, roses, lies of' the valley, wines and other embellishments for the wedding in a city thronged with worthy poor. Flowers are so perishable though so lvely, and they are now withered and dead. But criticism is not kind, and we must not f~rget that Miss Gould, (now the happy countess), provided a feast of ice cream, cake, etc., for twelve hundred little tots, to whom such treats are rare. The marriage service is, or should be, ever solemn, and the young heiress doubtless real ized the meaning of the words, "until death us do part." "She was per ceptibly nervoua, and no wonder, for she was entering an unknown untried future. hier life as a French countess will be very diff'erent from that of an American girl. God grant she may never know the arguish which befell poor Nellie Grant Sartoris. We wished to speak on anotnor topic, but forbear, fearing orur editor's patience is already exhausted. With best wishes for the year '95. March 18th, 1895. C A. S. In Poor Health means so much more than you imagine-serious and fatal diseases result from trifling ailments neglected.
