Lecal rht - -The steamer was overhauled Sat urday. -What would we do without Court three times a year? -Tomorrow is Ash. Wednesday the first day of the Lenten season. -The Presbyterian choir has been strengthened by the addition of two comets. -The commercial men are number less this season, and all report "trade mighty dull." -There is still snow on the ground, the balmy weather of the last few days to the contrary notwithstanding. -Services were held in all the churches Sunday sav the Baptist. The pastors in charge of each officiated. -Nearly every farmer you meet next I all will say, "try some of my tobacco;" well bring it up we will try it. -As soon as you read this paper prepare your bed for tobacco seed and write to THE NEWS AND BERALD. Seed free. -Mr. J. M. Elliott, Sr., and Mr. .U. L. Elliott, Sr., both of whom have been quite unwell, were out on the streets Monday. -Mr. R. V. Bray will build a to bacco barn on his place, so we are gin formed, and will cure tobacco for him self and others. -The vestibule passed through Sat urday morning working only one side of the engine. The drivers on the other side broke down near Blackstock. There will be a meetli g of the Young Ladies' Society of the L. R. P. Church this (Tuesday) afternoon at 5 o'clock at the residence of Mrs. P. Ketshin. -The Corner Store calls your at tention to the fact that their line of dry goods, shoes, etc., is especially cheap. The need of the hour, how ever, is garden feed. In potatoes they have a gem, and in onion sets and every known garden seed they are well supplied with select stock. - We bear that some parties have been digging for a supposed murdered negro in a saw-dust pile iii the Rocky Mount section. He was supposed to have been murdered before the mill was put there-about twenty years ago. "They say" the bank of saw dust which was unearthed is about as high as the jail. M. Cohen returned this week from his farm in Fairfield t'ounty. lie was completed snowed in while over there, so he says, not getting any mail or news from the outside world for six days. After some ex- s planation and information concerning I the matter Mr. Macfie concluded to try f ten acres. But the freeze came and a Mr. Mactie plowed up the tobacco 'bed C and put it in cotton. We had lost s sight of Mr. Pitts until he arrived on I the Sunday's train and was met by s Mr. Macfie from whom we learned F that Mr. Pitts had arrived to assist 0 him in a tobacco crop this year. We admire Mr. Macfie's determination to try it over. W. Egleston and Sam a Jackson. The testimony was long and tedious and resulted in a verdict of 3 not guilty. r On Saturdayl evening the case of Alfred McVeign and Eliz i Stevenson, o charged with burglary and larceny, p was nol prossed on account of an error 2 in the indictment. The case against William Sharpe, r charged with assault and battery, re sulted in a verdict of not guilty. The case against Denny S. Murphy, Dennis Carter and Tom Byrd, charged with assaalt and battery with intent to kill .enry L. Parr, was taken up en b Monday. Tne case against Murphy a1 was continued until next term of ourt. The Case consumed the greater tr part of the day and resulted in a ver- rt dict of guilty as to Dennis Carter and st guilty with recommendation to mercy B as to Tom Byrd. J 4 F THE HOG CONTEST. W As will be seen by our last issue, hi the day for weighing the pigs to be entered for the Fairfield priza is the w irst day of April. On that day the C ig must not weigh over 75 pounds. ci Some of our friends think that this onflicts with the News and Courier's C ace. It does not at all. All that is ecesary is to re-weigh the pig started n the News and Courier's race-that is, A n the first day of April. The reason sc we changed was that this year's pigs Y< ere scarce, thereby preventing ab reat many from entering. Had this bjecton been raised earlier we are atisfied that the News and Courier would have taken the weight instead C< f the age at the statt.
