Too OLD PAUPERS DIE.-Betsey Thomas and Erank Craig, two inmates of the county poor house, died there this week. Betsey was 80 years old * and Frank was 70. Too COLD FOR FIs.-The Newbern ~ (N. C.) Journal says that fish are so benumbed with cold that they sre being picked up in boats. The Joninas reports about 80 barrels being picked up and shipped to different points. BIG Woo.-The farmers are haul ing wood to town in large quantities at present, for there is no other kind of work for them to do. We have got enoughi of this weather for awhile. While the laundry expenses may be on the decrease the full bill grows in almost geometrical proportion. ANTI-BELLUM RECEIPT. - Sheriff Ellison issued a "slavery times" re ceipt to Constable Smith on Friday. Besides receipting for a wagon, horse and seome "forbidden fruit," he also receipted for two negroes, all now in his possession and in good order. IN THlE CONTEST.-Mr. J. B. Patri::k has notified us that he will enter the contest for the prize to be given for the largest hog raised in this county this year. DESPORT] A CIVrL SUi.-Trial Justice Cath cart bad a civil suit before him on Fri day. II.W.Gibson was the plaintiff and Holbrook Rion the defendant. The issue involved was whether Mr. Rion was liable for an account made by one of his tenants. The jury decided that he was. The sum involved was about $24 dolla'rs. CH3ICKEN SALAD.-We do not know any house-keeper in town who has ever used "bre'r rabbit" in making chicken salad but we are reliably in formed that one chicken and two rabbits will make a splendid salad. KILLD oN THE RAIL.-Ellison Laney, a colored barber at Fort Mills, was killed four miles south of Charlotte while coming home on Thursday morning. He had been to Charlotte for whiskey, and it is thought; that he fell and got hung in the cars. His brains were knocked out-on the track. He was evidently dragged some dis tance. A PI.EALANT OCCASzoN.-On Thurs day night despite the inclement weather about twenty--five young people spent a very enjoyable time at Mr. C. S. ONeal's home near town. They com menced with the Virginia reel and steal partners but they got down to bnsiness before they quit. Mr. and Mrs. ONeal made them have a very pleasant time. HELF IN TIE.-Mr. W. R. Doty sent a load of wood to a colored woman in town who was reported to him as needing aid, and when the wood arrived the woman was building a fire with her table. She was evi dently ia need, but she got it. Mr. W. R. Doty was the first man to in augurate the helping of the distressed and did so out of his own pocket, un til the Council took action. CoXrir WITH Orrn RULEs.--We have offered a prize of $15 for the largest and $5 for the next~ largest hog raised in Fairfield County in the year 1895. This prize is open to white and colored. Read the rules and let us know at once who are contesting. The only condition we exact is that each contestant must be a subscriber to the Weekly NEws iND HERALW and the subscription must be paid up to 1 Jan uary, 1896. Parties wishing to enter this contest who are already sub scribers must pay up to that date. New subscribers who want to try for this $20 prize in gold must send $1.50. HE SHOWED THE RIGHT SPIRIT.-A colored man by the name of San Gaither said to our reporter that the relief committee had sent his wife load of wood. That he knew nothing of it until it had been delivered ant had he known it sooner he wonld havi told the committge not to send it. Hi said he "did not want his name in thi papers" as receiving gifts, that hi worked for his living and had ;orderei wod which camne soon after the conm mnittees wood did. We admire Sam's spirit, if there were more of his kind the committee would not have so rnc] to do and the Council would not be imposed on. Let others follow Sam' example and lay up for a rainy day. It will interest the friends of the South Carolina Military Academy in this county to know that a magazine will be conducted by the Calliopean and Polytechnic Literary Societies of that institution. The first number will be issued in March. The subscription list is now open; the price being 75 cents per annum. Lieut. C. R Har in is the business manager. Caught the Public Carrier. Constable Smith arrived in town on Thursday morning and in the evening took passage on a country wagon go ing southward out offtown. He hap pened (?) to meet Mr. Sam Simpson's dray coming back from Rockton with two barrels of flour, but had an idea that they contained "the juice of the forbidden fruit." Consequently he put Sam Moore, the driver, in another Jacksonville boarding house. Jim Toatley was with Moore and the wagon, horse and the darkies were all jailed. The 10 gallons of the flower of corn and rye were deposited in the sheriff's office. The barrels were mark ed to Q. D. Davis, each barrel con taining 5 gallons packed in wheat straw. Sam Moore got pay from our reporter for doing some work before that work was done and he will never be able to stay out of trouble until he fulfills his contract. Mr. Simpson says he does not know who the liquor belonged to nor did he send his dray man for it. CONSTABLE SMITH PROSECUTES Constable Smith took out a warrant charging Sam Moore and Jim Toatley with handling .contraband liquors in the night time. They waived a pre liminary and will be bailed out of jail. The case will come off next week at Court. This is the first dispensary violation which has ever come before Cort in this county. The wagon and hors~of Mr. Sam Simpson, found in their possession and laden with the liquor, marked to Q. D. Davis, Winns boro, S.
