Our enterprising farner-merchant, Mr. J G. Wolling, has erected, at his own expense, a telephone line from his store to Shelton, on the S. & U. R. R., a disance of five miles, and to keep up his usual accomodating sp;rit, he allews hii friends and custo mers the free use of the line. K. DEATH OF MRS. S. S. COLEMAN. FEASTERVILLE, S. C., Dec. 28. -We are having a very quiet Xmas ill this section. I am pained to chronicle the recent death of Mrs. S. S. Coleman, which occurred on the twenty-seventh inst. Surrounded by sorrowing rela ives and friends, sh( passed quietly away. Mrs. Coleman possessed many amiable qualities that made her a host of friends, and those by whom she was best known, will be most grieved by this untimely dispensation. After a painful illness of several nonths she obeyed the final summons for which we are all listening, and which none can disobey. We feel that our loss is her eternal gain, ard, though she has gone fromr among us, we have great consolation in believing that the pain and anguish caused ther people and f'-ietnds by her death, will in the future be forever overcome by tbe glorious promise of a reutnion bey-ond the grave where we shall know one another, and ihere receive the reward of a faithful servant. We are taught that death loves a shinring light and nowhere has it been more fully exemplified thatn in the seath of our highly esteemed relative and friend. Sire believed that charity consistedl of kind deeds and practiced her belief, for there are manry who wilt long remember her kind deeds and words of comfort. We tender our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives. X. IMPORTANT ACTION OF BOARD OF TRADE. A Copy of the Circular Letter and Rteso lutions sent to South Attlantic and Gulf Cities. Gentlemen :-Enclosed are certain resolutions passed by the Key West Board of Trade on thre 4th inst., a reading of which will show you their scope and meaning. It is scarcely ne cessary to urge upon you the great im portance of action in this matter, as you will at once see the wisdom of the movement. From July to October, West Indian cyclones are a constant mienace to the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, more particularly the Gulf and South eastern States, and every effort should be. made to place the West India ser vice of thie United States Weather ilureatu on a sound basis. Individual boards have passed resolutions without effect, and it now becomes necessary to take broader action in organization sand thus compel recognlitionr. Cities in the interior of coast States should be just as much interested as those on the immediate ceast. It is sincerely s.nd earnestly hoped that you will take prrompt action and mail copies of your 1esolutions to your representatives in Congress anid the chief of the weather bureau. Please notify this board as to the action taken. KET WrEST, Fla., Dec. 4th, 1893. Whereas, During that period of each y-ear included between July 15th and October 25th, known as the "hurricane months," tr-opical storms, frequently of great violence, develop within the tr-opics over the West Indies and Ca ribbean Sea, sweep northward strik ing the Gulf or Atlantic seaboard, causing incalculable loss to both life and pr-operty in the States border-ing on1 the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlan tic 0. aan, as illustrated during the reason just passed, on August 27 at Savannah, Ga., and Beaufort, S. C., and Oct. 2d at New Orleans, when thousands of lives were lost and - :?roperty to the amount of several millions of dollars destroyed, and Whereas, Since these tropical cy elone-, develop and move under cer taitn natural laws, it is possible, in most cases, to give ample warning of their approach if sufficient and timely reports are received from the West1 Indies. While r-ecognizing and ap proving thre efforts of our National Werather Bureau in this direction, it is known that this valuable ser-vice is hampered through lack of means to , place the West India service on a proper footing. it is, therefore, Resolved, That it is the sesel5 of this - board that every effort should be made to have Congress appropriate a suffi cient amount out of the National Tr-easury to re-organize and perfect tire West Indiat weath'er service, and c to carryV the same onr, each year, on a throroughr, syst'ematic plan. In viewc of tire fear-ful losses sustained by the coasts, the amount which would have to be appropriated would be nominal. It is further P Resolved, That our representatives o in Congress be urged to give this their b earnest attention. They are also re- t) quested to give their influence and il support to any measure or estimate t, sent in by the U. S. Weather Bureau, b looking to the re-organization and & maintenance of the West India weath- ( er.service. And it is further Resolved, That copies of these reso- c lutions be sent to every Board of 4 Trade and Chamber of Commerce of e all the principal cities in the States bordering on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, from New York to Texas, and that they be requested to take similar action in this matter, which is of such ( vital importance to the entire country t east of the Mississippi. He said he knew that the time was very abort-a matter of only a few days-but he was powerless. The only man who has any power in the matter was the Comptroller General, who can extend the time, with the approval of the Govern'r, under the new act passed last year in regard to the matter.
