WINNSBORO, S. C. Thursday. June 29. :183 WE hope that the Alumni of the South Carolina College in this county will remember the me eting on July 8. AND Columbia must have at leas one dispensary. So says the Ihchland board of control, and that makes il law. TRE towns must hay, diipensarieg whether they want them or not. This is the promised "self-govern ment" Governor Tillmarn arnd his followers talked so much about dNiring the campaign. flow real self-guvern meat is mocked! CRt:.ENVII.E :18s had a (llspeUba'Y forced on Ler unwillingly. The board of control took the untenable position that a signature te an applicant's petition for dispenser was one and the same thing as a signature jr the es tablishmient of a dispensary. WHATEVER may be said about the dispensary, however ab-iminable the law mav seem to us, it is the duty oJ good citizens to see that the law is enforced. Bad results have followed in this State from disregard of law, and some statutes are violated with a smile. Contempt and disregard for the laws of a commonwealth are dangerous. WE have received from firm Messrs. G. k C. Merriam & Co. Webster's International Dictionary. It is an exceedingly handsome volume bound in sheep skin covering over 2,000 pages. The work is superior to the una bridged; it retains the well known excellence in definitions for which Webster is noted, but in etymology, pronunciation, citations, and pictoral illustrations, it is far superior to its old predecessor. The important fea ture of pronunciation has been under the direction of Rieverend Samuel W. Barnum and Professor Samuel Porter, of the National Deaf-Mute College, Washington, D. C. Mr. Barnum was trained under Professor Goodrick in special and exact know ledge of the subject, and Professor Porter contributes a guide to pronunci ation, being the result of study in Phonology in the physiological method. This dictionary is published by G. k C. Merriam Company, Springfield, Mass., and we recommend it highly. THE action of the India government has impressed the President and his cabinet with the urgency and imnpor tance of an extra session of Congress. The extra session will certainly be held in the early part of September. India has been among the greatest users of silver, and uses practically nio gold. India having now abandoned its silver standard and adopted the gold standard of Great Britian, it fol lows, according to the well known law of supply and demand, that silver dollars will depreciate, so that now silver dollars _have already tu.mbled - ronm 67 cents to 585 cents. Silver dollars masy tumble still further, and probably will. This is a serious situ ation for the United States as the most of the money in this country has been issued on a basis of silver bullion. China is the only country, we believe, left now with a single silver standard, and that country is not considered a very potent factor in the adjustment of financial problems between nations. It is a serious matter and demands attention. 6100 Reward, 6100. The reader of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. Ilall's Catarrh Cure( is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh beinga constitutional disease, requires a con stitutional treatment. Iiall's Catarri Cure is taken internally, acting di rectly on the blood and mucous sur faces of the system, thereby destroyin~ the foundation of the disease, anc giving the patient strength by build ing up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The pro prietors have so much faith in its cura tive powers, that they offer One Hun dred Dollars for arty case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Address, F. J. Iinton, a section master on the Greenville road, near Alston, came to this city today about noon to receive the attention of Dr. Taylor for a wound inflicted by a Mr. Murphy, in a difficulty this morning. Mr. Hinton reports that Murphy claimed that the cattle guard on the road was defective and had let some* cattle into his field. He said lie in tended suing the road. In this suit he wanted 3ir. Hinton to testify in his behalf, that the guard was defective. This Mr. Hinton refased to do, as the guard was, in his opinion, in proper condition. Ile was at Murphy's house this morning when a discussion arose over the matter. Mfurphy became en raged and fired at him one time, but maissed him. A seconi sDt was fired and the ball struck him in the region of the abdomen. Ile then closed inon Murphy and took his pistol from him after a hard struggle. Mr. Hinton brought the pistol, a Smith & Wesson, to the city with him. He said he was in a good deal of pain, but the extent of the weund could not be deteriined until the doctor saw it. We Prize Most are not the gew gaw s an d gi'meracks we gather about us. Every life, of course, has its sacred tinseled treas ures, but in this p-racttcal v orka-di ay world man is prone to value most those things which serve him best. Not much sentiment in this. per haps, but some sense all the same. The McCormick Machine of Steel takes first rank the world over. Hundreds of thousands of grain growers call it the best harvester and binder that ever went irnto a grain field, and they prize it accord ingly. It isn't sentiment vwith them -it's just plain, old-fashioned com .mon sense. They like it best be cause it serves them best. It costs more money titan some harvesters, but that's because it's more valuable. Its advantages more than offset the added cost. The " Machine of Steel" is built to harvest the grain crop of the world, and to do it better than any other machine. * Perhaps you may care to know more about this harvester.
