ihop John Chrlistlan Keener,
D. D.,
Who presides over the delibera
tions of our Confeienctliif ar,
was born in Baltimore, Md., Feb
ruary 7, 1819. Ho graduated at
the Wesleyan University',Middle
town, Conieotiont, in 1885. He
was converted in Wesley Chapel,
Bltimore, .Februitry $, 16888 In
1.843 he was adiitted on 'triil in
the .Alabama Conference, and sent
as junior preaclir with Di'. Lovick
Pierce to the Franklin Street
Methodist Church; in thp city of
Mobile. After' filling aypoint
ients in Demopolis, Tuskalbosa
and Montgomery, Ala., he . was
transferred inj$48 .to Lotiisiana
Conference, and stationed in New
Orleans. From '1859 -'to 1866,
with the exceptioii of a fo*,.years,
he served the New. Orleans Dis
triot as Presiding Elder, some
times exercising that office 'in con
nection with the pastorate of one
of the city churches. From 1866
until his election to the episcopa
cy, in 1870, he was Presiding El
der and editor of the New Orleans
Christian Advocate.
This is -the third time that
Bishop Keener has presided over
the South Carolina Colifer'dnce,
so he needs no introduction to our
clerical readers. He makes an
admirable presiding officer, and
has rare administrative ability.
His varied and extended experi
ence in n6arly' every: department
of Church w,rk, from the duties
of the junior preacher to those of
Presiding Elder and editor, cmi
nently qualifies him for thd dis:
charge of the delicate and respon
sible duties of the episcopacy.
As'a.preacher, the Bishop takos
high rank. His sermons are quite
above the average, and aie char
acterized.by 'a clearness of state-.
mont, a.logicil force and a spir
itual power that seldom fail to
carry conviction to the mind and
heart of every hearer. A sermon
which he preached before- the
Mississippi Conference, shortly
before ins elevation to the episco
pacy, gie, him a connectional
repuation us -a. preacher" of 1rare
force and power. The echoes
from that remarkable discourse
have not yet died- away in the
Mississippi v'alley. Buit Bishop
* ~ Keener can hardly be conisidered
a popular preacher, as hat 'term
is usually understood. Ho is
more and' better 'than 'that.. His
aimi in the, pulpit is to 'convince
the judgm~ent and' move the will.
rather than pleas'e the fancy by ~
the show and tinsel of mere ora
tory. 'With thoughtfiA h#arrs
those who appreciate strength
more than polish, who seek in
struction rather than entertain
ment, 'Bisliop Keenei" vill hirays
be a favorite. Not that' lifq per

unaffected and sincere. But tlieso
qualities, are prnoperly 'made 'to
take a s6cond p ace in the prea'dh
er's equipment for' the wvpi of
.the pulpit.'
Our, readers nieod nuot be told of
Bishop Keener's gifts as ai 'yriter.
* His .contributions to this papr
during the presoent year are' suffi
ceont alone to establish his. repu
tation as a writer of grace, force
and ability. One of those articles
--describmng theo Flood and the
incidents connectell therewith-is
one of the finest pieces of Fang
lish composition that it has, ever
been our good 'fortuAne to road.
It is an open secret, we 'believe,
that the Bishop sometimes courts
the:Muses. and is no moan writer
