F ;t Cut ay, zeptemaber 11X 1888. FORs PRESIDENT : QRO'VE1t -LEVELAND, OF NEW YORK. FOR VIOM'RESIDENT ALLEN G. THURMAN, OY OR!O. gtood Results or the l'resent VPm ' I ytl The Now York Evening Post thinks that the present political campaign is one of the most valuable poliil campaigns in years for the~ education of the masses in the solence of govern ment, in that a specofic measure of logislation has boon proposed to cure a spQofo evil. The measure referred to Is tariff reform. A great many writers and speakers are engaged in discussing the measure and many are -the contradictory statements in regard to It. Some misrepresent the matter while others are engaged in refuting thase misrepresentations and explain ing and defining the real prinoliples involved. The publio, like a jury, listen to thise statements and will be called upon to render its judgmeont. In exercising this judgment the pub lie receives an education in poities wh!nh could not be gaed by years in the study of books at colleges and schools. As compared with other campaigns in recent years this Is by far the best of them all, from an edu cational point of view, for formerly the parties did not represent any di. gtinct priniples, but fought the politi oal battles from purely partisan grounds. The Republicans voted for te the epublican candidates aimply be cause that party was In power during the war and becaus they loved the old party names. Democrats voted the Democratic ticket because they thought the Demnocrate were bett r men for of oo than Republicans and also for their lov of the party. In all these atinpaigns thereorse abun- i dalt appeals to hatred, pride prejudic and jealousy. In this campaign all this is changed. The appeal s made to the reason of the voters. This tshar, and the only one, cannot be carried or defeated by appeal to proju dice or Jealousy, but must e disettssed with some degree. of mental exertion. Thus this campaign becomes one of great educational advantage, and what - aver is cqirend oy one,ll not be ost dice orljealousy, fut msthe dscurse. witstomedegroelo od metaldtion. n Thusptign cmpaig bec ome s one of great educational avaltag, and at-uc evrhsacqed may it wilth eult buvembll hoeu ting he fuue.ti,ta Ovoters ilae horaer beter pc custoed to follo al 'vtratonh andat think, rand nthis caming tae this ptcapfai mt be ,dw sold alf grea reocdatthns, vand tono one suc we mus t llrece.Prsien Whtver h made the result iqur Noveber ohe people. erai, ha vtrwib wore'te beterk. e nTona iattesp to fom tormo btielalise from th at o th in ing,il redcehe wilcrainyges doe nogenl thetractodint cmaig thanefori any es bfre. hago teerk n our pawlitrial aithae we ishoul mal faetreoie attimuatd to no oe weow ith gminorkn oreiden stevad who ade the issdergoqngaro ty ereta the pepl nprt,i mTd he ep e to raten workmng btoligt item agt thpoer atll bill will reduce theiruh wage dos not fihetAen cans eie ulgn workmen chyhv than u qetikngasp nth erta ithorhef ry mterialu otefr lis the maui .cturs wll be stimulaste to oporeit workcthusngiin wh eocrn morty. plomt, and wagsues willo beote steauiransta tof uandtegoneare hauctiot, Thf whaoley act of tuea. Among other matters the President speaks of the dangers of a surplus, the restrict tion of undesirable immigration, and an adherence to the principles of clvil service reform, all of which he advoi catos. In speaking of labor the Presi. dont says that the Democratic party proposes to encourage labor by cheap ouing ,the costs of thQ necessaries of life and thereby increase the purchas. iug power of the workingmen's wages and add to the comforts of his home. In the matter of trusts the President follows the Democratic party in de. nouncing them as the ''offspring of a market artificially restricted." He says that the tariff enlarges the limit , within which they may operate and e increases the extent of their power. Among the good results promised by o revenue reform is the checking of those baleful operations. The Issues of the day are clearly set forth in his G letter, and it is the most able, fair and . honest statement of the Democratic position yet given the public. Tias Columbia Register, under the headline, "Journalistic Impartiality," says: The Winnsboro NEws AND HERALD takes the cake for fair play and a free ( fight. The Register, after reporting the insertion of Perry and Duncan circu lars both, as a supplement in our paper, says: Our Fairfield contemporary will have friends at court never mind how the gander hops. If the Register . had noticed with any degree of care it would have seen that Uoth of the circulars sent out were advertisements, which were duly paid for like some other articles on the same subject in the Register some time in the beginning of the cam paign. There is nothing wishy-washy about TlE NEWS AND HEnALD. If we thought either Mr. Perry or Mr. Dun .an unfit to represent our districtIn n the national leglslature we would not l csitate to say so.
