OUR STANDARD-BEAUERS.
FOR PRESIDENT :
GROVER CLEVELAND,
OF NEW YORK.,
FOR VICE-PRESIDENT :
ALLEN G. THURMAN,
OF 01110.
The Democratic 0onvention.
The Democratic Convention at St.
Louis, according to general expeota.
tion, nominated Grover Cleveland
for the office of President. Ills noni.
nation not only created great enthusi.
asm in the Convention, but it lint
given enthusiastic satisfaction to the
whole couitry. Cleveland is the peo
plo's candidate, representing the great
demand for reduced taxation, and
under this platform he will undoubt.
edly be re-elected. There was no
great amount of Interest centred in
his nomination, for it was a foregone
conclusion.
The contest centred in the Vice.
Presidency. It was generally thought
that there should be some Indiana
man on the ticket in order to make
that State safe for the )emocrocy. The
Convention thought otherwise. and
nominated Allen G. Thurman, of Ohio,
as the second man on the ticket. lils
nonination secned to ho generally
desired In the party, and ho received
it.
Mr. Thurman is from Ohio, a lie
publican State, ordinarily, and it is
hardly to be expected that he will
carry It in this election, but. he seems to
be most popular in that State as well
as In the Pacific States, which nom
nated him. Indeed, he is popular
throughout the country, and the only
objection to hin was that he uight
not be able to carry Indiana. It has
turned out that Thurman is a inost
popular man in that State, and can in
all probability carry it.
The party has done well. Its action
will commnd itself to every 1)emo
crat in the country. The Democratic
party will win on the tarili' question
regardless of its candidates. Judge
Thurman is most popular in South
Carolina, and is name to the ticket
