K. Elliott showed us a cu riosity in a cotton plant on Saturday. The plant was only two days above ground, but it had a tap root at least seven inches long. -The committee on declamation in the recent contest in the Euphradian Society of the South Carolina College awarded a medal -to Mr. E. Scott Douglass, of this co'unty. -Mr. G. A. White advertises this morning a new and delicious drink which he dispcinses at his soda foun. tain. 'The subject of the lecture will be, "What is Education?" Dr. Mayo is a most interqsting talker, knd no subject 'which he handles can be dull. We hope our people will attend, in large nuthbers. The County Democratic Convention met in the Court House on Saturday at 12 o'clock, Chairman Gaillard pre siding. 'The chairman read the call for the convention and also the proper method of procedttre ,as difected by the County and State Executive Com imittees. . The chalrman made' a few remarks, appealing to the contention to stand by the record of the Demo cratic party, and whatever was done to *do it with calm conlderation. Nominations for county chairman was entered into. Col. H. A. Gaillard was nominated. Ho begged to decline the*honor, but the, convention wvould not listen to him, and he was re-elect ed by acclamation.. . I. N. Obear, Esq., .wvas appointed temporary secretary. The nominees 6f the diffei'ent clubs for meti'ers of the executive com mxittee were confirmed. Geo. H. McMaster was unanimous ly elected vloe-chairman, anid H. N. Oboar was elected secretary. The roll of the clubs was called and a large majority of the delegates an' swered to their naies. Many names were.brought before the convention, and a motion to close the nominations was .tabled. Nominations continued. Before the election pvas entered into G. H. McMaster offered a resolution that delegates.be instructed to oppose the nomination of State officers at the forthcoming convention. This ressolu tion excited some debate among the members, but it was overiwhehpxingly adopted.. T. W. Lauderdale offered the follow ing resolution which was adopted: Whkereaa, we have had for the past three years a clean, honest and conser vative administration in national af fairs, decidedlly the best in twenty-fiye years, be it Resolved, That the Demorats of Fairfield, in convention assembled, unaninously endorse the admilnistra tion of 2resident Cleveland, and be lieving that It will be to the best inter ests of the whole country to have him re.elected, we instrudt onr delegates to the State Convention to: do all in their power to havo delegates sent to St. Louis who Wfi support'him for a second term of office. W. R. Itabb then- offered this resolu tion: ResQlved, TPhat we oppose the pri mary plan of nominating State offi eers, Congressmen and Solicitor. Thuis resohutlon received no opposi tion, although several mepubers speke in its behalf. On mjotion of 8. RI. Rutland the vote was talgen separately on 8Sthte,. Judi cial and Congrdssional offlcers. The resolution as offered was adopted. fy. S. Gunnoll mnoved that delegates receiving the highest number of votes be declared elected. This was -op. posed by W. R. Rabb, but the motion prevailed. J. Johnson, thanking Capt. Ii. A. Gaillard and G. H. McMaster, Esq., chairman and vice chairman for the most able; efficient and faithful nianner in which they had served the cdunty Democracy, was unanimon'sly adopted. J. S. (xunnell offered this resolution: That in the opinion of the convention the nominatiqn of the officers of county auditor, county treasurer, jury commissioner, and supervisor of Reg {stration be made to the Governor through the primary of,. the Democras cy.. This resolution elicted a very heated discussion, and it seem'ed at times as though the convention would get be yond the control'of the chair. After many calls to order a vote was taken and the resolution adopted by a large majority. In the discussien of Mr. Gunnell's resolutlop all speakers. on the subject said that.there was not the least dissat isfaction with the present incumbents, but that it seemed to them right, that the p)eople should select their own officers entirely. R. A. Meares offered the following resolution which was adopted: That Art IX'. of the constitration of the Democratic p arty of' Fairfield be changed by stri kig out' the word "elective", and inserting the wor<f all, so that ' the Article shall read: The systenr of primary elections by ballot is hereby prescribed as the mode of nominating candidates for all coun ty officers and fol' the General Assemn bly. The said elections shall be con ducted under the rules and regniations to be fixed by the county executive committee. The convention then adjourned sine die.
