WILLIFORD & Co. -There being much interest taken in the Smith election in this place, we had a special telegraphic ieport from Columbia announcing the result, which was placed on our bulletin board. This was the first news of the result to many of our citizens, and the board was eagerly scanned by those inter ested. -W call attention to the now ad vertisemnent of J. 0. -Bong. This house has always enjoyed an enviable record in the millinery line, and this records will be -kept to its present standard. Anything, also, may be obtained from them in the general merchandise line,' and it will repay one to give,.them a call. --It may not be generally known that in this county there are quarries of whetstone of the finest quality. One tract below Winnsboro, contain ing this stone Is in the hands of Cald well & Co. for sale. We believe If this ~industry is developed it will prove. a paying one. There has been some talk, but wvhIch has -not yet assumed \ definiteness, ot quarrying this rock. -The millinery establishment of Mrs. J. D. McCarley is indeed a gem in its line. The taste with wilich the goodsp are arranged and the general neatness of its three departments can not fail to 'attract the attention and dollars of any who enter. This brick yard will be commenced at an early dato,.and we hopo that the venture will prove a successful one. PERsONAL.-J. T. Barron, Esq., of Columbia, was in town on Wednesday on business. Dr. J. P. Kennedy, of MoConnolls ville, York county, visited friends in Winnsboro two days this week. Mr. W. S. Rabb has secured a posi tion in the asylum and has left for that place. Mr. Rabb's familiar face will be greatly missed by his many friends here, but they wish him at the same time abundant success in his new field. TRY GILDER'S PILLS For the Liver. The playing on the musical rocks was a thoroughly en joyable and novel feature. Many other unique musical instruments wore introduced and performed upon. Among other parts of the programme there was some vety fine quartottes by the family. It was the most enjoya ble musical entertainment of the sea son. Mr. T. W. Lauderdale was called to the chair, and it was decided to organize the Company at once, so as to get to work about the first of May. There has been a'dearth of news since my last,-so far as relates to public in terest. We have had an abundance of rain for the last month, consequently I the farmers are much behind with 1 their work. There ar6 a few who are well up, while others have done very little, comparatively. The amount of fertilizers used far exceeds any amount in the last fow years. I am glad to see our old friend J. M. j G. is taking so much interest in the agricultural prosperity of our county, by way of giving us his experience in the cultivation of cotton. lie is a man of fino judgment and much experience, t and what he has to say is worthy of imitation. Miss Mary Wylie has been visiting friends in this neighborhood, and I i think has formed some strong attach monts. We would like to see the visit 1 renewed. Mosars. J. C. and Labon Chappell have returned from Birmingham, where they have been in business for some time. Mr. Jack Chappell is at home, and his brother I heat' is in busi ness in Columbia. I learn they were very much pleased and benefitted, but I am better pleased to know that old Fairfield has so strong an attachment as to bring them back. I am sorry to announce the death of Miss Nannio Curlee. She died at the residence of her brother, Mr. J. R. Oureo on Sunday, March 25. She was a very promising young lady, just in the bloom of life. Her health has been bad for several years, and for the last few months she was confined to the house and bed. Her death was not unexpected by herself, and she left assurances that all was well. The funeral services were conducted . by the Rev. N. K., Melton, and her re mains" were placed at rest in the Greentriii burying grotind. The family has the sympathy of the whole community. Three weeks ago her siter, Mrs. Ligon, was buried. Tbis , Is a severe blow to t'he aged mother and family. Mrs. Summers and family, of New berry, are visiting the family of Mr. T. C. Caumak. In response to a call of some citizens of Ridgeway, about twenty of the twenty-five voters in the town, met atC the post office to nominate candidates for Intendant and Wardens, on Mon day, the 2nd inst. Mr. A. F. Rluff was called to the chair, and Mr. A. A. Morris acted as secretary. The object of the meeting was stated by the chair t and nominations were made. WV. H. Ruff was nominatedi, but dteclined. Dr. R. H. Edmunds wyas nomintated, but It wvas stated in th'e meeting that he would not serve if elected. A. F. Rluff was nominated, but declined, stating that his business was such as to necessitate frequent absence from town. W. H. Ruff was again nomi nated, but he positively declined,t stating that his duties In the store was. such that ho could not attend to the du ties of the place, and that he would not have the position under any cir cumnstances. Jno. A. Desportes was j thati nominated and elected without a e dissenting vote. Balloting for WYar- f dens then took place with the follow. ing result: 1. C. Thomas, R. D. B3o liek, E. C. Helis, and 8. F. Cooper. These nominations. were then made unanimous. It was rumored on Sat urday that there would be another ticket in the field. On Monday morn ing when tihe pols were opened it . was discovered that, the ticket was really out. -Two gentlemen who took part in the regular nominations In the citizens meetin)g were present at the polls to challenge votes. They made, or pretended to make five challenges -all of them being colored but one. TIhe election proceeded with some ox citement, aund wvhen the result was an nounced it was discovered that Wj. HI. fluff, who had positively' refused a nomination in the citizens meeting, had been elected by a majorlty of two. The Wardens elected were: I. C. Thomas, (whose name was on both 'I tickets) R. D.
