The law against carrying concealed deadly weapons ought also to be repealed as far as Lancaster Is concerned. t .I Not Wanted. As chief advocate of the bill pro- I viding for the calling of a constitu tional convention Col. If we have expensive county gov ernments and a still more expensive State government, as alleged, it is ] certainly not necessary to call an ex pensive convention to get rid of them. If the Constitution provides for any' superfluous office it is a very easy matter to pass a simple amendment lopping ofr the same without entailing on the taxpayers any cost whatever. It is creditable to the House of Representatives that this bill should have been buried beyond a possibility of resurrection at this term. It will very likely come before the next Leg islature, however, and hence it is needfnll that the people should make it plain the meantime that they will not pay for a convention simply to gratify the idiosyncrasies of a few ambitious politicians. We thought the suggestion a good one, and have been waiting for some stop to be taken in pursuance thereof. There is no reason why we should not have a cotton factory at this place; the money is here, the brains are here, the only trouble seems to be that the industrial energy of the community is asleep. It is getting to be the duty of somebody to stir things up. A cotton factory will pay here; everybody knows this; the raw mate rial is right at hand; wood and water are quite accessible. Then why don't we have the factory. The truth has at ia t dawned on the people of the South, that the indus tries of this section ~ust be diversi fied, antd every 1ssu of the manufac. turing journals of toii country teem with accounts of n ~W oniterprises of various kinds, sprh ging up all over the country. ,The pebple are going to work; they have adopted the princi pIe of co-operation and are develop ing the natural resources of the sec tion. The p)arties to the Charleston, and Dr. T. C. Robertson, ( ofColumbia. Teaction is brought by Col. Mc Crady to recover ten thousand dol lars damages for alleged libelous mnat ter concerning himself, published by the defenidant Dr. Robertson. The cause has its orIgin in a private quar-r rel between the p)arties. Dr. Robert son has not gone behind the door to defame the character of Col. McGrady ; lie has not whispered in secret what he dared not speak out in public; on the contrary the action is based on a letter written by the defendant-to the'Io -plaintIft' himself, in which the chargos complained of are explicitly made, publication admitted, and the plaintiff' advertised of time, place and circum- ' stance. The complaint in this action had no. sooner been made public than the Charleston daily papers rushed, In ~ C partisan haste, to the issues, before i they were made up to say that Col.t McCrady was not guilty, and to give ~ their unsought testimony to his high moral character, etc. Now we have not one ' word to say against Col. McCrady ; we will spend' noe opinion as to the merits of the case in the premises until we have heard both sides, but we do desire to say in ( reply to what has been said, that Dr.. Robertson, the defendant, is well known in this community, where lhe was reared; that lie is known here to be :a man of unspottedi honor, integ rity and verocity ; that he can find as many and as good men in this latitude to testify to his good character as the eager friends of Col.
