A COTTON .Fli'.-On Thursday morning, just about day light fire was discovered in the cotton lying on the platform at Woodwards. Before any thing could be done towards extin guishing the flames ninety-five bales wdre consumed, The loss falls wholly on the railroad company, the cotton having been received by them. The platform was also burned. Prepara tions were being made to rebuild the depot burned last year, and it is a fortunate circumstance that it had not been or it would have also went in the general wreck. There is no other explanation of,the origin of the fire, except that it, caught from a spark from a passing engine. WOODEN BUILDINGS.-There is no statute on our book, we believe, pro hibiting the erection of wooden build ings on Main street or anywhere else. We believe it is high time something of this kind should be done, in reference to Main street at least. Already there are many wooden build ings on that street which are a stand ing invitation to a big conflagration, which, wonderful to say, has never come. But if it ever comes the fewer wooden buildings th'a smaller the fire. Thero are vast interests wrapt up in the buildings in the business portion of the street, and to further jeopardize these interests by the erection of wooden buildings is suicidal in our view.' The Council will doubtless pul a stop to it hereafter.. PRoF. LOWANDA's GIFT SHOW. Prof. Lowanda's gift entertainment on Thursday night drew a crowded house at the Opera House. The entertain ment was greatly enjoyed by those present. The prograftme consisted o1 sleight of hand performance, comedy, music and distribution of prizes. The majority of the crowd drew blanks, of course, but all stood a chance. Silver castors, pickle stands and other arti cles of table ware were given away, as was also $25 in cash. Most of the money was distriknted in twent-five cent prizes, although several drew one or two dollars,'while one lucky citizen drew five shiny dollars of the boodle. The company also gave an antertain. ment last night,' with the usual distri bution, and there wvili be another to-night. TRY GILDER'S PiLLS For the Liver. * McMAsTER, BRIIOE & KETOHIN. THE hOT SUFPrn.-The hot suppei of the Ladies' Aid Society was held at the Thespian Hall on Thursday night, and was most successfbu .from every point of view, although the attendanct was not quite so large as expected. Still everything passed off most pleas. antly, and those who were present enjoyed one of the nicest suppet's imag' inable. Everything was served thai was calcnlated to tickle the palate, and ample justice was done the many tempting delicacies. The young ladiec of theotown acted as waiters, and thai it was most charmingly done goec without saying. The total amonni realized clear of expenses was abou $45. Thus the first entertainment oi the Society was crowned with a full measure of success, and the ladies have abundant cause for congratulations. Bteneows her Youth.
