'r, TI ' NW8 AN~D HERALD, t r VIIM$8OUIO, S. U. w. ]: eD1V.tD, Iaozroae. V. &. KgenO*fAZD Heard vs. Brata*. A corporal's gaard of farmners me in the Court House on Saturday last and Mr. T.' S. Brice took occasion t4 indulge 1i some personal reflection on the editors of Tai NRws ari HERA..D. Ho seemed to think that w were "upstarts" and sadly deficient i the matter of "boards." Our objeotions to Mr. Brico are of a different line. We think he has vastly more beard than brains. We think, too, that he is cne of thi last men that ought to court a contro versy to be settled with intolleotua weapons, but this is a matter for bin to decide; it is enough for us to kn or that in the simplicity of his under standing he has indulged in an unpre Yoked personal attack trpon us. We, therefore, take occasion to sa to Mr. Brico that we are perfectl willing that he should masquerad around here as the tall to Mr. Til man's kite, and flop and flop as ofte as he wants to, but we warn the ge tietnan that if he ventures agal around this office in the ostentation o his bearded superiority, we will shea him closer than Delilah over sheare Sampson. Acquitted. It will be a relief to the many friend of Mr. George Johnstone throughou the State to know that he has beei promptly acquitted of the seriou charge which was preferred agaius him, and which had been the subjee of some unfavorable comment in thi public press. This was natural; the lips of thi defendant are always properly sealei after a homicide, and it is but natura that ex parte statements should invoki unfavorable reflections. The safe plan for the public and the press t< pursue is to pass no opinion until thi defendant I as been hoard in his owl behalf; to disregard this rule is it nine cases - out of ton to prejudge hi Case. Mr. Johnstone and his friends hav felt aggrieved towards the press especially the News and Courier, bu whatever that grievance may hav been, it must now be entirely re moved, for after 'hearing the whol ease the News and Courier was a prompt to vindicate Mr. Johnstone a it had previonaly hernn to censure hin * with the lights that wore then befor< Everybody, while regretting the un fortunate eircumstancos which culmi nated in the tragedy in which Mr John B. Jones lost his bright young life, will be glad to know that Mr Johnstono acted only in sell-defence. Mr. Johnstone is a young man o truly eminent ability; he carries thi promise of great usef\tlness. Hoe hai been promptly vindicated by twelva of his countrymen, sworn to truly try the issues, and weo join in the univer sat desire for his nutur'e success. The Cotton Plant. What a royal plant it is I The worlk waits in attendance on Its growth. The shoi; that falls whispering ori its leaves is heard around the earth. The sun that shines on it is tempered by the prayers of all people. The f-ost that chills it and the dew tha descends from the stars are noted, and the trespass of a little worm on its green leaf is more to England than thc advance of the Russian army on hei Asian outposts. It is old 'from the instant it puts forth its (Iny shoot. Itt fibre is current in every bank, and when loosing its fleeces to the sun ii floats a sunny banner that glorifiot the field of the humbler farmer, thai man is marshalled under a dag thai will compel the allegiance of the world, and wvring a subsidy frow every nation on earth. It is the hori tage that God gave to this people forever as their owvn when he arched our skies, established our mountains girt us about with the ocean, loosed the breezes, temnpered the sunshine and measured the rail. Our's and our childron's forever. As princely a talent as ever camne from Is hand tc mortal stewardship. H. W. GunD. The Aequaittal of Mt.. George Johnstone. (2VNeto and (lourier~.) The promptitude withr which Mr. George Johnstono was acquitted on his trial for the murder of Mr. John B. Jones at Newberry in March last is nilly accounted for by the evidence as published in the News and Uourier. There is no room to doubt that the killing was in self-defense, and that * ~ Mr. Johnstone was entirely free ni'omi blaaio. It is shown, however, that both Johnstone and Jones were armed when they entered the Court-room in which the fatal encounter took place. Mr. Johnstone had been led to ox peel an attack, it is true; but the attack could have been prevented. The vio lation of the State law against carry. ing concealed weapons gave Mr. Jones the means of imperriluing Mir. John stone's life, and at the saine timeo caused' him to lose ihis own. H-ad both* Jones and Jo9hnstone been up armed: when the immediate cause of the mortal combat arose there would have been time for reflec(ion and for a peaceful settlement* of differences. Still It Is evident that, if Mr. John stone alone Ihad been unarmed he would, In all probability, have Leen killed on the spot. We iobserve that, in the report of the trial, it is stated that both the conpqi for the defence fond fault with ~the press, for 'various publica. ti a and ,osnm nt, We are no aware that special fault has been foun with 'comments of the. News an , in_'these columns. They wi arrated by the facts, as Thry ~o, could be as4ex'tained, But,i, i $ ~ing;ofa dspatch announchig In tion to apply for rolese on 1 r. J'oh se ,was sty ed a 4 rer. s of ocourso was both noorrect and wrong. Although the result of pure thoughtlessness, it is none the less to be regretted. Mr. Johnstono, as we have said, is. completely exonerated, and, we are confident to the entire satisfaction of the public. None can regret more than he regrets the awful necessity 9 which circumstances im osed upon him; but there was no choice, no alter native. A man of proved courage, character and capacity he is ow free to continue a career whlch cannot fail to be honorable to himself and advan tageous to his fellow-citizens. SPOWDER Absolutely Pure.
