Pause and Inquire.
Now that the anarchists have been
convicted and executed, the peoplo of E
Chicago, and of Illinois, had botter I
pause to inquire what it is in the con
dition of things around them, which 1
produces such a development as an
archy. It will not be altogether safe t
for them to rest in the conviction that l
it is the result of a causeless inclination
to wickedness; these people are driven
into rebellion against the existing
order of things by the hard grind of a
life of toll that is without hope.
The ranks of the anarchists are
filled for the most part from the opera.
tors in mines and factories, where
competition, combinations, pools and
other things have driven wages down
to a bare subsistence; their struggle
is a struggle against industrial slavery;
that they have serious grievances is
beyond all cavil. Terrible, indeed,
must be the condition of things which
drives men to preach or listen to a
gospel of dynamite and murder.
The anarchists demand a total aboli
tion of the "wage system." .They ask
to be allowed to share in the profits of
their labor. Their grievances must be
met in a spirit of fairness, and ad
justed, repressive measures will only
intensify the evil.
Democratie Condue*.
The election has made plain the
course of Democratic conduct. There
is now no doubt whatever as to the
Presidential candidate. The President
%vill be renominated, not only without
opposition, but without serious dis
sent.
The only personal question Wvhich
will occupy the attention of the party
will be the selection of a Vice-Presi
dential candidate. Considerations of
locality will determine the choice.
Some Western statesman will doubt
less be chosen ta complete the ticket.
The preliminary canvass is thus re
lieved of those obstacles to party
union which are usually found in the
aspirations of prominent men, and in
the rivalries of their friends and fbl
lowers.
We may hope then that the canvass,
thus freed from personal dissensions,
will be conducted upon a higher plano,
and will be occupied with great public
politics.
Our duty as to measures is as plain
as our chokue of the man. The federalj
taxation mu8t be straighitway reduced.I
No party, no government can long
ondunro the strain put upon it by thie
collection and disbursement of a
greater revenue than is necessary.
The collection of unnecessary taxes
is an odions form of tyranny. It
breeds popular discontent and de
stroys that confidouce in the adminis
tration of public affairs without which
free institutions cannot be mnaintained1.

disinterested witness. Considered in
this light, it is at once seen that the
penalty falls not upon the party cxcltt
:led, but rather upon the due adminis
tration orjustice.
Again, we repeat, that all wit
lasses w ho are offered should be heard
-lack of Integrity and trustworthiness
