I. state Weather service. The following communication has been received by Major Pagan from Mr. Graham, of the State Weather Service, in regard to weather reports. It is & good idea and will doubtleks meet the approval of every one: 4:oLUMIA, S. 0.. 18 May, 1887. IEAR SiR-I beg to call your atten tion -to a new feature of dignal Ser. vice work, in , which you will be interested. It is desired to have reliable reports giving the fibets of the weather during each week, on the various staple crops of the State. These reports, when contiensed by me, will be telegraphed from Colum. bia to the Chief Signal office, at Washington D. O. every Saturday, and a special bulletin, containing re liable information relative to the cli matio conditions vbhtoh have existed the previous week in the agricultural districts of the country, will be given to the press every Monday. This information, when compared with the accurate. meteorological data collected by the Signal Service. will serve as a reliable basis for determining .'the conditions favorable or unfavorable for the growing crop. Assuming that you will assist us, far as possible, in this important work, I enclose herewith cards on which please give such items as relate to the subject-for example: Say, weather favorable during week (or so many d ) for cotton? corn? oats? etc. etc., ligt showers at night? warm days, sufficient sunshine, good growing weather, too much rain, too dry, too warm, too cold, etc. etc., (as case may be) and in fhot any information you may deem important to the subject matter. These cards should be mailed to Columbia so as to reach me on each Saturday. It is desirable that they be as complete as possible, and cover as much of the current week as practicable, and therefore they should be held by you for the last mail that wilibring them to me in time to be of use. The report, if possible, should cover the date on which it is made and the six preceding days and mailed in time to reach me on Saturday. The following letter from D. W. Frazier, a former citizen of our county to his father, has been handed us with the request that it be published, in order that his friends may know something of his living in Liberia. Hie was sent' to'that country several years ago by the Northern Presby terian Church as a missionary, and as will be seen aby his letter is well pleased with the country, and has accumulated some pr'operty since he went there. He visited his former home in this county last year. SINOE, LIBEnIA, 19 March, 1887. DEAR FATusR-Your favor of the 12th uIt., reached me on the 17th inst. at Monrovia. I ran up here a shorA while this week to secure some lumber and nails, in order to finish my house before the rains set in, in the months of May and June. Since I wrote'you I have put me up a two-story house of six rooms, and have it nearly fiuished, all but the partitions in the up-stairs and the piazza. I have been very busy indeed. I am glad that you received the money sent you, but I do not like the idea of so long a delay before you send acknowledgement of the same. It gave me no little uneasiness not knowing whether or not you had re ceived it. When 1 send anything hereafter please answer my letter as soon as received, else it places me at groat odds. I am sorry to learn of so great a number of deaths. It .appears that people die in America as well as in Airloa. Also -sorry to hear of the 'failures in crops. I knew long since that there was nothing much to be made in the South on the present basis of rental system, and high pces for Northern prognocte, and telien system. For my part, I think it will be a long time before I will live in the South or any part of America again.
