Editor's: In a short comin. before the last, an allusion was madi to the fact that some kind friends had employed and were paying a laborci to perform the work on the farm of sick and crippled Confederate soldier At the time I only intended to state i fact without any thought of appealina for or reciving any help for my un. fortunate friend. The return mal) brought me a letter from Prof. R Means Davis, of the South Caroline College, containing a timely and val uablo contribution, two dollars ster ling, "I would like to contribute r mite towards hiring a hand to heli that sick old Confederate soldier." My friend has had many mnisfortunes. Earl in the year he lost his only worli animal. A never-failing friend pro vided him with another, and since my communication this one also has died This misfortune is a fresh and strona appeal to my own sympathy, and] desire now to be of use to my frIend in procuring another. I don't thini that I have ever known a man whc attempted to support a family by field labor ;under such disadvantages. H< walks on a heavy wooden log. I havc seen him ploughing on steep, rugged hillsides, and on cioddy, rough creel bottoms. Few, indeed, are the met who would swing around rocks stumps and clods a wooden log, noi simply from day to day, but frow year to year. Most men would takt some nigh cut-make their wives d( it or run fr office, He knows noth. ing of my disposition to get him help, as I have not seen him to consult him, tHis assistance from his 'family is noi much in the way of work-has thro< small children to raise-is in ever way worthy of help. I sinerely trust that this public use of a private.communication will not be off'ensive to Prof. Davis, as 1 only wish to hold up his kind act as at example to stimulate others to heIr an nnfcrtunate man. Permit me to say further that I anm encouraged to this because I sincerely think that misfortunes have been uin, equally distributed. In tils imme. diate section a few years ago there passed over a cyclone which swepi away everything, siuce then, along iti track, the people have suffered greatly from sickness and death. As they plant mostly on rivers, etc., they losi their corn crop last year, and they are now under a heavy strain. 1 -hope, Messrs. Editors, that yon will receiye and forward mec any hell) that kind hearts may be inclined te g fve. Isalbe acknowledged. A itefrmmany would so much glad. den the heart of a brave, true man, whose life has been made at least a burden, by a patriotic endeavor tc defend his country. J. D). MAIKON.
