Editors: Allow -ine-to'ac Li km.oweqdge, through yo:r coiu.mps, the r reveigt.of'a very handsone studeilt's , chair, acconipaiied with these modest . wdirds,~ "A slight testimonial of tie atfctionaid esteem of your friends in e the nejghborhood of Hiorah.church.". I do not wish, by :thus making public one of those unobtrusive ministries' r which are.seldoin chronicled, and eon 1 sequently have no reward on earth, to .ro1) my "frIends" of their rewd-l in the world to come. But as I do not D know who are these friends, I am forced t to take this-public way of revealing niyelf. Say to them, if you please, that I took in 'seat'in this lovely dhtifi r as soon as received, and composed a , sermon I think of rather unusual "ten , dera'ess," and delivered it last Sunday , with rather unusual "emphasis," their kindness being the decidedly unusial inc-ative. Inter nos, Messrs. Editors, alloW me respectflully to suggest that if you waia, to hear a good sermon just scnd your pastor a present, especially if it be one like mine. My word for it, you will be hmply rewarded. But please don't forget to oflbr my sincere thanks to those dear-ladies I had almost said, for I strongly suspect that I they are at tie bottom of it, as they usually are of everything that is genl . erous nill noble. T. W. MELLICIIAMP. Ridgeway, S. C. - GOVEUNOR BUTLER'S OPINIONs. Governor Butler, of Massachusetts, who was in New York Thursday, ex pressed the opinion that the prospects for the Demo'rats electing the next President are good. He does not 3 think the Democrats in Congress will do anything to fritter away the party's strength. He says there are but two questlonis on which the parties can divide-one is the sectional issue, the renewal of the fight between the North and the South, which the Republicans I are making; the other is the issue upon a reduction of the tariff, which tile Democrats are making. Governor Butler savs lie stands squarely on the platforin of the Democratic convention. of Massachusetts, and insists that it is thle duty of the national government to raise only so much revenue as is abso littelv ieded for tie economlcal car Irying on of the government; that tis anmount of revenueo shlould be raised by means of a tariff, and that in levv'ime~ that tarifi; Amnerican enterprise 'and American industry should b~e inci dentally protected. In other wordIs, the necessities of the gover'Inment t~o be met by taxationt should be made as light as p~ossible, and the taxation should be so judicionshv'distribjuted as to best foster Am'erican' literests. As to tile possi1ble Demnocratic candidates for President and Vice-President, Governor flutlei/lleclined to talk, but lhe concededl that thle "old ticket" htad a gtreat deal of straenagth throughout - the countrv'. In regardl to the Repub -licana candidates, Governmor Butler said a in his juidgmtenit the ue'ectiona of Prosi - dlent Arthur to head the ticket would be tile wisest course for the Republican convention to pur'sue.
