AGUIOUTA1UBE.
OANADA TBSrLU.-The thistle is th4
most annbftig wood that Intrudes upoi
the farm. Hard to exterminate and to
nacious of life, it propagates wherevers
plans of any kind can secure a foothold
and once in possession of a field the oos
of its eradicatfo is sometimes greatei
than the value of the field itself. It i
a perennial plant, with annual stems
and reproduces itself from steds au
roots, and it is due to its power of rapi(
repyoduction that it is enabled t<
withstand the farmer's attacks so sue
ctssfully.
The thistle is now receiving the at
tention of many experioaced and prac
tical agriculturists, among them Mr
Archibald 8tone, of Binghamton, N. Y.
who states that no plant is so entireol
dependent on sunshine as the Canada
thistle, Grow thM in mass, or s(
closely together that they will complete
ly shade the ground, ani as fast as th<
leaves get matured sulliciently to begit
to restore to the plant the nutiiment il
has cost the plant to produce them then
they will be through in the shado b3
the constantly increasing mass of leave
on the top; they will die for want ol
suushiue, the stems become naked anc
the roots become exhausted while ii
bloom, and your ground will have to L)(
reseeded before another crop grows. I
the thistles are so scattering that thej
will Pot shade the ground, corn, oats 01
clover will have to be sown,
in his article to the Husbandmau,Mr,
Stone states that ripening a crop of see
is exhaustive to any crop, yet to thinl
of getting rid of Canada thiatles b1
mowing after they had ripened a crop o
keed and burning it cems to be to(
slow a process for this age.
Other writers have recommended dif
ferent methods for exterminating the
tLlittles,and claim that individual efforth
alone are useless. As the down is easil)
carried by the winds to considerable
disiances the cleanest fields are as lia.
ble to infliction as'the foulest. No mat.
ter how careful a farmer may be tokoet
the pest ol, his efforts will be throwi
away if his adjoining neighbors do not
exercise the same care as himself. The
work of destruction can be done at th<
most suitable periods by co-operativt
action, and each individual wtil be na
much interested in the work upon hik
neighbor's field as upon his own. The
distribution of the seeds must be pro
vented in priferonco to anything else,
and much labor may be saved in so do.
ing by mowing the thistles when
young, and before they can have an op
portunity to seed. it must be done ai
often as necessity for so doing occurs,
and the next business will be to destroy
the plants by shading with some othoi
crop, and pulling or digging them out
which is not often necessary, excepi
when fields are entirely overrun. But
the continued use of the mower is on<
of the best remedies to try, although il
requires the abandonment of tWe floki
for a season. That, however, is the pen.
alty the farmer pays for the intrusion,
and is not heavy compareti with othot
tried methods.
It might be claimed without much
exaggeration that the growth of at singic
thistle on a farm is the beginniug of
decay, and should cause as much alarm
as the entrance of an epidemic in a com
munity. As sanitary measures are nood.
ed In the case of epidemic, so is co-op
erative effort required to prevent the
spread of thistles.
Cows, which are to give milk througli

How TO bUi-soin. -Sub-?soiling always
pays if properly done. It is advisable'
however, if you have to bring the sub
soil to the surface, not to go more thai
a couple (ef inches deeper than the pre
vlous plowing, unless you can allordt t<
manure the land and lot it lie idle for a
year. If you use the common fallou

soon afterward cross--plow so as to brinj
-up again the soil that belongs en the
top, and harrow deep and thoroughly
you will raise the biggest corn you ovoi

TUN SUVSN TO oUATAIN.-As for the
night-oaps, they must have bon . insti.
tuted in the times' when snow used to
sift under the eaves upon leepers in
their beds, or when the winds entering
by a hundred crevices in walls, win.
dows and doors, would 'bring all the
fresh cold air from out of doors upon
the unconscious heads. Modern '1im
provement" has made sleeping-rooms
air-tight, except for a lower window,
and has carried off the bed-ourtains,
too, which used to keep off draught at
night or the blinding daylight in the
early morning from the sleeper's egyes.
There has been a fashionable returv,
lately, not to the old fashioned tester
and the fourpost canopy, that shut in
all t ur corners of the bed, but to a
headboard canopy with curtains that
merely shade the pillows. This is very
pleasant, pretty and comfortable, as it
doos screen the eyes of sound sleepers
from the glare of daylight, which is
meant by nature to awaken them,
but does not always bring anything be
yond irritation in their sleep. A mod
itled return to bed-cuitains and head
canopies will certainly enabla people
to have more fresh air and light in their
led-rooms that some persons allow.
The reaction against the old fashion
went too far, and the satisluotory mid
dle distance is now allowed.
DAMPNESS IN HOUSIEs -Many hous<
holders are sorely troubled by the
growth of fungi in damp rooms, to
-which they communicate, in a sho t
time, an unplea aut smell and unwhole
some atmosphere. X& is not only our
cellars that are apt to be afoted by
fungoid growth, but the walls of the
adjacent rooms, and many bed rooms 1
on the ground floor are similarly rem.
derod useless after a moist season,
Many rewelies have been pioposed to
destroy this fungoid growth, or to pro
vent it occurrence; but hitherto these
remedies have been too expensive or
totally ineflicacious. Recently an alco.
holic solution of fivo grammes of sali
cylic acid per litre of water for washirg
the walls of rc oms has been recom
mended. This is exactly one-half per v
cent., or one part saheylic acid for 200
parts liquid. No doubt the mold may
be destroyed temporarily by this as b3
many other solutions, such, for in
stance, as corrosive sublimato or car
bolie acid. The true remedy, however,
Is not this temporary expedient, nor -
attempting to hide the dampness by a
enamel painta, etc. ; it is to cut ofl' the
source of moisture and to put the
waterproof materials outside and not
inside tho walls.
FRiD MEATH.-These are regarded
by all authorities on hygiene as injur
ious. Burat grease of any kind is di.
gested with difficulty and is specially
harmful to those suffering from dys
pepsia. Moats should be roasted,
baked, broiled or boiled, but neyer
fried. TLose who have coal stoves can
easily broil their steaks ; those who
have wood stoves can do the same with
a little manaigement. The fire can be 3
so used as to furnish coals when they are
heeded; brands may be removed from the
fire-box, and the meat in a wire broil r
or toaster be placed over the coals. A
pair of bellows is useful in keeping the
coals bright and glowing. It pays to
take a little trouble to have broiled
steak, and if one is dyspeptic he should
utterly reject all fried meats.
80MBTHINo aNiw iN BENT,-Beets are
familiar enough boiled or sliced, either
served hot with butter, pepper and
salt, or pickled ; but a novelty is a
beet pudding, made by mixing a pint ofi
cooked sugar beets, chopped, with four
eggs, a quart of milk, a little Bait andi
pepper, a tabiepooniul of butter, and
baking them half and hour ; cold boiled
beets sliced and fried with butter are
palatable ; to cook thorm so that none
of their color shall be lost, carefully
wvash them without breaking the skini
or cutting off the roots or stalks, and
boil them until tender, about an hour,
in boiling salt water.
(lnAPE LEAVES FOn PICKLES.,- A cor
respondent recommends the use ol
afresh green grape leaves to place on
top of pickles in jars in place of flan
nel or cloth usually employed. The
tleaves will preserve the vinegar sharp
anti clear, and imparts a nice flavor.
The leaves should be rinsedt in pure
water and left to drain before use and
occasionally changed, They exclude
the air, and besides imparting a do
lightful odor to the pickle, cause loss
trouble to the housewife.
