AMONG TIE JUSTICES.-Tho caso of the State against Horace Jackson, charged with trespass, was heard be fore Justice Nell on Tuesday after neon, the 27th inst. Tihe defendant was found guilty and sentenced to pay a fio of ten dollars and costs or be Imprisoned in the county jail ten days. The fine and costs were paid and the defendant was discharged. The case of the Stato against John Floyd and John Mack, charged with bunting and ranging upon the prom Isos, of Mr. George Robertson, Sr., without permission, was tried before Justice Catheart on Tuesday, the 27th inst. Messrs. McDonald & Douglass appeared for the State and Messrs. Ragsdale & Ragsdale for the dnfino - ,uay and sentenced to pay each a fine of ten dol lars and costs or be confined in the 30nty jail twenty days. Counsel for :ho defeice gave notice of appeal and :he dofondpnts gave bond pending tppeal. CO3MMITTED FOR BURGLARY.-The )relimninary examination in the case of ,ho Stato against Thomas Cullen, sharged with burglary was held before istico Neil in the court-houso on L'uesday, the 27th inst. Messrs. Mc L)oyald & Douglass appeared for the lefondant. Thomas Cullenl is charged vith having comitted the burglary ipon the premises of Mr. James Q. i)avis on Garden street in this place m Wednesday night, the 21st inst., a 'uli account of which was given in hose columns last week. The evi lence produced against the defendant vas principally circumstantial. His >r.scnce in town on the arternoon of lie burglary, his strange and suspi ious conduct while here, leaving own early on Thursday morning on bot, his demeanor when captured. at lidgeway, were among the circum tances against hii. For fully two hours lhe held le mixed audience of whites an~d )lacks, men91 and boys, spell-bound ivith his thrilling oratory. The speak r covered the entire fild of the dis mussion, and, though unot sensational, 1e painted in vivid colors the evils of~ ntemnperance andi closed with a pow ~rfuil arraignment of the cxicting law, icensing the trafic. The lecture took vell and doubtless strong impressions ivoro made upon the colored portioni >f the audience. On motion, a hearty roto of thanks was tendceod the speaker for his address. Speeches, forcible and to the poinl,wcre made in the course of the evening by Messrs. V. K. Elliott and A. M. Mackey. On Tulesdlay evening, promptly at seven o'clock, the hour apploinited, the 11ev. A. Coke Smith, of Charleston, was at his -post of duty, and all wvho were present felt the impetus lhe gave to the movement in Winnsboro. The Revy. Mr. Smith kindly came to Winns boro upon the special invitation of some of our prominent citizens, and his reputation throughout the State had caused anticipations to run high, mid no higher and more deserved com pliment ean be paid the address of the ovening than the fact that no oine left the court-house disappoi ntedl, or duri ing the hour and three-quarters grew weary or tired of It. For logical power, sublime pathos and lofty elo quence we have seldom heard his sup~erlor and scarcely his equal. In systematIc and natural order lie spoke of the causes of intemperance and then of thie remedies to be employed. In his description of the potent Influ ences of home-life upon01 the temperate or intemperate habits of men, and of the mission of women ini the cause, lie reached the climax of lis polished aderess, and temperance men, women and children woent to their homes and fircsides strengthened in the convic tIon that the cause was right and would finially triumph. The orator was accompanied by the R1ev. Dr. Darby, of Columbia, who, on invi tion, offered prayer at the opening of the meeting.
