AGUIOULTURF. STOREO PoTATos.-There are thre methods of storing in general use, eae) of which has its merits and its champi ons. Three general principles underli these several methods, viz: Protectioi against frosts and temperature, freedon from moisture and avoidance of heating caused by storing too deep. The ad vantages claimed for storing in barrel are that the roots are easily handied,d not suffer from abrasion, can be casil examined, and if disease appoars it caj be readily checked and removed. Tn chief objection to this method is th time and exponeo involved when tLi crop is a largo one. Bins are largol; coming Into use, especially in localitie near large cities, for the potatoes can a any time be readily reached and pre pared for market. A coc 1, dry, wol ventilated cellar, with the light exelud ed, is an admirable place in which t< store potatoes. The argument in favor of storing po tatoos under ground is that there is lit tle if any loss by evaporation. Objec tions to the plan are the labor involvo in opening the banks when the roots ar( required and the risk involved from ti extremes of too closo or insuffloient cov ering. When pits are employed it i important that arrangements be mad, for ventilation. When stored in cellars, barns or root houses it is a safe plan not to fill th bins with roots to a (lopth oxeedin threo or four feet. It has beon claimo, that lime sprinkled in barrels or bins a that rate, say one pound to eaoh barrol tends to prevent decay by acting as at absorbent and nottralizing the earth odors. The importanco of oxoludin light from potatoes and keeping thno as cool as possible without freezing, cat, not bo over-estimated. SAVX THE COnNFO'DE R.--Thoro wil be as good a crop of cornfodder thi year as in moot years, honce it bhoove eyory farmer to look to its careful pro servatrion, which is not always done a well as it should be. It is tru the od der Is a heavy article to handle, unlos the husking is deferrod to a porio when the fodder bogomos somewha dry, somtimes it lit lo miouldy, anud the, it is frequently loft in the flold until th latter part of November or beginning o Doomber, greatl(o to its injury, Th corn itself, when the husking is defer red, trequently becomes mouldy, am its valuo deteriorated. It is better t< hisk it as soon after the stalks aro ou and the gi ains have becomo hardened and orib at once. This allows the air t pass through the mass frooly and drie it gradually and safely. All farierm, who have any exl'erienlec in fooding good uornfoddor, must ad mit that cattle prefer it to tho best elo vor bay, and it, is flly as milk-produc Ing, and more so when the stalks ar< slightly salted. They will then eat II all that is thits prepared for thema ant thrivo upon it. We know this as wel from our own experience as the experi once of others. Cornfodder is not thorefore, merely worth being cured ii the best mannor, but it should be ai object of real conern with all who keel catile, equally as miuch as with clove hay. It is not pleasant.. thon, to sC sI many fields of fodder everywhere eve the colantry moulding anid spoiling latl in November, or even the forlpairt c December, merely for the sake of a lit tle additional labor to preserve it asi should be, by storing it, away to helj eut tine wintor' stock ofi cattle food. D~oos have done more injury to shee1 husbandry thtan all other catusos com binied, and, conisiderimg the inmportanc, of the evil, it does not rceive that noe taco at the hiainud of that agriculturai press thait it rightly deserves. A substitute for coffee is growing into an important article of commerce in London. The kola nut is largely used in tropical Africa to make an invigorat ing beverage, and some months ago it was subjected to a careful analysis, the result of which was that it was found to be richer in oaffeine than the best oof fee, while it contains the same active principle as cocoa, The negroes are said never to touch coffee when they can obtain kola nut. Dr. Damell, an authority on such matters, says that it will soon find its way into European commerce. Samples have been sent to medical men in London for experiment, and to farmers and planters for agricul tural purposes. It is believed to aid di gestion, and also to render people capa ble of withstanding the depression con sequent upon prolonged labor. More enthusiastic advocates still say that it relieves melancholia, and not only sub dues the craving for alcohol, but pre vents its intoxicating effects, Women and Her Diseases is the title of a large illustreted treatise, by Dr. R.
