Up to the first of July crops we very
promising, but'sihce no rain has fallen
only in a few places, and' cotton has
suffered terribly. From one-fourth to
one-half of a crop can only be expect
ed, and in some places It is all open.
Fortunately corn was made before the
dry weather commienced', aitd this with
good 'wheht and oats crdl, will still
enable the farmers to live.
A very serious question now with
many is how to got A supply of drink
ing water. It is hauled for miles, and
sold in all the small towns on this road.
The water wagons are looked for anx
iously as they make their daily rounds.
This may sound strange to you that
live in a vell watered country, but
such is the case in Western Texas. The
prairies that. were so green are now
bro' ti, mid fierce fires-are tZiging every
(lay, set by sparks frdi passing trains.
It is clkitn'ed by the farmers here
that they have a rust-proof wheat-the
"Nicaragua". It is a Very 'h:'dy
wheat, and will make from one third
to one-half more, planted :'by other
rarieties. The only objection, it is so
hurd that. it cannot be ground on coin
nonw mills. I would like to see it
tested in South Carolina. It can be
boutght. iII the"itwns from sixty to seven
hy cents per bushel.
