FEEDING FOn QUALITY AND YIELD.-A
writer has the following to say regard.

ly and yield: "To produce first-class
gilt-edged butter from a herd of Jersey
cows, the food must be pure and whole
some at all times. Weds in pastures
or hay destroy the flue flavor of the but
ter.. Rag weed and others are as injur
ious in a manner as wild onions. The
next great point is cleanliess,eommen
cing at the yards and stables, and end
ing with the finishing of the butter. To
wet a cow's teats while milking is a
filthy prao:ico, and should never be tol
orated. If these rules are strictly ad
herou to and the modern (dairy fixtures
employed,the result will be satisfactory.
If it is not, then the dairy maid has no- f
gleoted something, or she does not un
derstand the business. J have noticed
in your valuable paper the statement of iv
a correspondent that if a cow yields a
largo amount of butter it will be of an ,
inferior quality on account of the largo tl
quantity of food required to produce it. 14

foi instance, Mr. Darling's young cow,
Bomba,now admitted to be the queen of
her family, and full sister to F. M. Ca- b
ryl's young bull, Trailer, who, floml all

Violet-Alphea family. Bomba was not d
over-fed during her oflloial test. To f

good food of a bulky nature, as much as

you can got her to eat up clean, with
plenty of pure water to drink, and not w
allow her to bo beaten, worried or exci- a
ted; and you may be assured that the '
hood will not injure the quality of her m
butter. Any practical man knows,when P
testing a cow, that if he overfeeds her tl
she will surely go off her feet inside of t
three days, and probably be sick from
indigestion. That ends the test until a
she recovers her health. It is sheer r
folly to try to force a sixteen or eighteen t
pound cow to yield twenty-one pounds
of butter in seven days. There is no
food known to dairymen that will do ~

CARE should be taken to see that e
plants in pots are given gbbd drainage. t
This is best secured by putting a lot of 6
broken bricks or pieces of broken pots e
in the bottom of the flower-pot. Theso 1
pieces should be as large as a hazolnut t
cr even larger. Over heso pieces some
dried moss, sphagnum or pontt should
be placed, or even a handful of dry
grass, if nothing better can be hai.This I
will prevent the earth from falling
among the fragments and will insure I
complete drainago. It is sulpposed, of 1
course, that the regular flowor-pots are
used with a hole at the bottom for the N
escape of the water. If a box or other t
vessel be used a hole should be made in t
the bottom. Persons who have never c
tried the above method will be surpris- i

A WOMAN whose dress seemed to prove

They advised her to wait for the
spring patterns, and during the interval
to secure an opinion froni Oscar Wilde,
and she decided to do so.

The Morning JJerald, Baltimore, id.,
states: Major 13. S. White, of this city, do
scribes his miraculous cure as follows. "I
have been a partially dead man for ten
