AGRIOULTURE,
ManaT Oniou.-bthere iro several

the profit being more or less according
to the method of breeding. Much de
pcnds upon the kind of fowl used. The
Brahma is one of the best we have for
general purposes, as that breed grows
to a large size, lays well, and is hardy,
but while it possesses many good qual
ities, it is untitted for producing broil
ers. as it is 'leggy" when very young,
and does not readily fatten until it is
nearly matured. A cross of the Leg
horn on the Birahma is one of the best
that can be na:to ii early pullets are to
be kr pt for laying in the full, an' such a
cross combines the quick growth of the
Leghorn with the "tze, vigor and lhar
diness of the Brahna, and the broilers
so producei, though a little slower in
reaching the proper weight, :2r tint
boned, plump and attractivo in appear
ance, possessing rich, yellow skin and
legs. .In crosamg Leghorns with the
large breet. s. unfornty of color can be
secured by mating brown Leghorn coel s
with partridge, Uoohin or diark Brahn,a
nous,or white Leghorn cocks with light
Brahma or white Uchiu hens.
Of the pure breeds there is nothing
that can compare with the Pl) mouth
itocks for piouucing the most salable
chicks up to the ago of three nuonths,
and the younger ous as broilers are

DOMESTIC,
ONE of a set of small drawers in my
pantry is called the salve box. In one
end is a small compartment like the till
of an old-fashioned chest, and in this
are kept salves of various kinds. In
the drawer there is always to be found
tin abundance of old, soft cotton and
linen cloths, with a few strong strips
for bandages, a ball of soft yarn, (which,
being flexible, is much bettor than twine
for tying up inflamed fingers,) fluffy
bits of cotton batting and pieces of old
kid gloves for spreading salve upon.
Something very'adhesivo,like balsam fir
salve, is a necessity, as a very little
here and there ak.ng the bandage for a
sore finger will make a string unneces
sary, beside keeping the tloth in place
much better than if tied on.
iTTER and sugar, about three parts
of the latter thoroughly mixed with one
of the former, are excellent to stop a
cough causol by a tiolding in th3 throat.
If this does not avail, melt the mixture
and add a little vinegar. Many find
relief by eating a little rock salt, or, if
this is imnpossiblo to oLtain, table salt
will answer the same piu pose, although
the first is much the better. One
troubled with ia hacking cough should
never be found without a bit of hoar
hountd candy or a tow hernels of rock
salt iln the ;osket, with which to check
an attuck while at church or during
ullts.
MELT half an ounce of camphor gun",
if an ounce of glycorit,e, and one
ollt of niutton tallow,,nd,l apply to
the hntds evoy night. It will whiten
them nicely. F+'or home-mado camphfor
ice, melt half a teacupful of mutton til
low, put into it a piece of camphor gum
about the sizo of it large hickory nut
anud add a teaspoonful of olve oil. Pour
into It mould to harden, Pitlverized
borax is excellent to irop into the water
to soften the skin. If your lands aru
rough whien 3o wash them, dip your
liogrrs in the hom ax and rl) your hands
thoroughly togetlwr.

stirred, is an excellent rinedy for croup.

the hoarso cough is not soon cheCted, a
