'I Every implement. should be provided beforehand, that no time may be wasted ia making Purchases or repairs after the work should begin. We have known a half day of plowing to be lost because the whifiletrees wele not at hand. Some farmers start out with their spring plowing without a single plowpolit in stock, and when one is needed, the team is taken from the field and driven to the store. Such a loss of time is a serious mat ter, and should be thoughtfully guarded against by ample provision of all such arti cles of the farm. It Is a poor time 'to mend a harrow when it should be at work in the field. We do not favor that economy-if 'it may be so called-that relies upon the neighbors for manyof the tools of the farm There are certain farm implements that may be owned In partnership, as a roller or reaper, but the constant borrowing of rakes, forks, etc., is not a wise and econ omical practice. Be provided with all these essential farm tools, and have them in good order, and at hand when the time arrives for using them. Now is the time to look to these mat ters, and make all needed preparations for the busy days that will soon be here. In the peace of.winter prepare for the war of spring. TuNM Kieffer pear is now being much discussed In the agricultural papers, and very opposite opinions are expressed con corning it. We have tasted the fruit, and find it anything but fine In quality; but perbaps we did not have go>d specimene. .it is claimed to be blight proof, and that its high colored fruit sells at handsome S- prices. We hope it may prove a deetrable acquisition; Brunton's early biackberry is mentioned as attracting considerable at tention. It is very early, and on that ac count will prove prfitable as a market ber ry. The early barvest blackberry may also be mentioned as a growing favorite. The champion quince is very showy, and of good quality for cooking; the tree bears abundantly when quite young, if allowed to. The Jefferson grape is a red grape, of large size and pleasant flavor. The Vergennes grape is hardy and ripens much earlier then the Jefferson. It Is also a red grape. Tn composition of cow's mi;k is affec ted by various circumstances; under ex treme conditiois it may contain from 10 to 16 per cent, of dry matter. The milk is poorer when the quantity produced is large or the diet insufficient, and richer when those conditions are reversed, A cow is generally in full milk from the sec ond to the seventh week after calving; alter this period the milk gradually diminishes in quantity, but Increases in richness. A separation of cream takes place in the ud. der; the milk first drawn is poor in fat,the richness Increasing as milking proceeds, the last drawn milk containing two or three times as much fat as the first drawn. The milk of old cows Is commonly poorer than that of young cows. Tu lollowing are the points desirable in a practical farmer's hog: Fine short nose, dished face, fine ears, good width between eyes, eyes not too p)romineint; a straight, broad back of uinstorim width from shoulders to hanm, short legs and fine bone. Hie should stand well up on nis plns, ist at any age, and, if well reared, make a weight of 2510 to 2251 pounds at eleven months. N4ow, does8 not the fore going description of a model farm hog full describe the well bred Berkshiret I think all will agree that it does, and I am satis fied that It the reader will notice the char acter of all the various breeds of swime lhe will find that the most popr iar ones are those which conie nearest to the iiodel of a farmer's hog piresented above. A Naw Jersey poultry breeder, aftei' trying the value of ftklmmed milk and buttermilk as food for laying hens and lhegs, came to the conclusion to dispense with the hogs and feed the milk to the fowls, as it keeps them In good laying condition In winter, and is as cheap as anything else that can be given them, iIe thinks poulti'y can be kept with great pro ilt on dairy farms. Uuourenzns.-A Wisconsin gardener, on the strength of experience, commends to townsDeople who want fresh cuoumbers, the practice of growing them in a barrel partly sunk in the back-yard, fillied half full of manure, and the renmainder with soil, seeds planted on the Eurface, and vimes dropping over the sides. I-r is propored to establish three creame ries in Ontario at Government expense, to give instruction in butter-makinug. Creamery butter sells from 8 to 10 cents per pound higher than ordinary butter. One enter prising young farmer In Ottawa went over to the States, look lessons in an Ameripan creaimery, and now his butter sells 10 cents higher than that of hisi neighbors. Hience the desard to make improvements general. ONE half of the ca'e and labor required to earn $60 tilling some crop will produce that amount for the farmer if bestowed upon his flock of fowls, If you propose to him to persistingly neglect his best cow irom one end of the year to the other he will set you down as a candidate for the lunatic asylum, yet a common sized flock of fowls, such as are kept at most farm steads, will yield as much value yearly, If p)roperly treated, as a first rate cow. IN a soil once fertile, but exhausted by Improvident tillage, the loss of fertility applies chiefly to the surface, and If we go below the distance that the roots of tne grain extended, we may generally find a subsoil rich in the elements that give vigor to the growth of plants. In the approved modes of agriculture, we seek to reach and bring up the subsoil by deep plowing. FARMERs who have basement barns can feed calves through the Winter with profit providing the animals are beifers of good rmiking or butter breeds. If, on the other - hand, they are to be butchered and not krept as cows, calves are worth the most and with the least cost when from four to five weeks old._____ IN shipping fruits and vegetables in cold Winter weather line the barrels and boxes - with a couple of thicknesses of news or wrapping paper. So says a man who had twenty carrels so lined detained on frack * for over forty-eight hours,' with the mer cury at zero. There was no fire in the ear. The apples came out all right. * , l$3AR any large city a pond of clear water is worth more for itscrop of ice than the rental value of the same area of aver age farm landI. The value of the ice crop is likely to increase, as its use is extending fat beyond the Increase of supply. Large quantities of ice are now brought to South. ern cities from Canada and Maine. - 'Ois pound of fresh eggs is worth al -mest as much for food as two pounds of 4 - beef. An egg conmains every necessity Wor th9 developkneht'of the perfect animal; ,~ ~ ,,atgi y6t eggs pfoperiy .cooked are rarely op64e the tarmer's table. .x EANxras recipe receixmends the following 'ut into a large basin 1 lb. of iyory-blaok, .lib. of treacle, and * lb. of sweet oil. Stir there ingredents up with a.stlok, and lot it stnd for twenty. four houre. Then add a I lb, of oil of vitriol MfX with three times its weight of old water. Before pouring some into the small bottle for daily use, thoroughly shake the ontents of large jar for soev eral nonutos. Some of the cheap "blkin "sold are very injurious to shoe lea er as they craok and burn it. A boy with a top tried to spin it. But his hand got a thorn right in it, The sport didn't spoil, For St. Jacob's Oil, Cured his hurt in less tian a mnit. A red-haired clerk in Savannah, Slipped on a piece of banana, Great pain he endurad, But St. Jacob's Oil cured, lie now goes dancing with Eannah. ITALAN SALAD. -An Italian salad may be made at any time of the year of any vegetable that is in season, or a suita ble mixture of cooked vegetables may be taken for It. If lettuces and endive are used for it, let them be dried per fectly before being used. Shredithe lettuce finely, and toss it lighily with Tarragon vinegar and salt. Place It on a dish that has been made as cool as possible with a dozen filleted anchovies rolled in parsley and a teaspoonful of capers. Just before serving, toss the salad lightly with a quarter of a pint of mayonnaise, garnish with boiled beet root out into strips, and four hard-boil ed eggs cut into quarters. Crown the whole with stoned olives and serve, **"Troubles often come f om whence we least expect them." Yet we may often prevent or counteract them by prompt and intelligent action. Thousands of persons are constantly troubled with a combination of diseases. Diseased kidneys and costive bowels are their tormentors.
