re 4O9TILG MUoARDO.-Woods,' or nything of the kind; to protect orchards, are a very good thing, if protected on the proper side; but nine times out of ten the protection is on the wrong side, which is almost always seen on the north or west side, whereas it should be on the east and south sides. It is the cold that injures or chards and the protection on the north or west will scarcely make I, any warmer. An orchard should always have a northern and never a southern exposure. And why? Because the southern exposure will cause the buds to expand so early that the frost will nearly always catch and kill or dam age them. On the contrary a northern ex posure will keep them back until after danger from frost has passed. If the frost melts away before the sun reaches the bloom, tie truit will not be killed; but if the orchard has an eastern exposure, so the early sun can reach the bloom, the fruit will nearly almost always be killed by a sharp frost. If the orchard has a wes tern exposure, or Is protected by dense woods of tall timbers on the east, the frost will melt away before the sun reaches It. The orchard thus protected will bear every year. . I have noticed this for many years and khow it to be true. PUEPAlING CATvLE FJR WINTER.--ThO lman, who, thinkig.to build cattle up for winter on turnips, containing only ten per cent. of starch and no oil, or on parsnips, generally counted as pretty good teed, yet with only eletvn per cent, of starch and no oil, will make very slow headway in deed, Preparatory to the coming on of cold weather cattle require concentrated food, such as is the opposite of being wa tery and washy. A moment's considera tion of the fact that oats or corn standing in value as seven to one, while the food value of turnips or carrots is as one hun. dred and fifty to one, will show that the latter should not be relied upon when Atrength and flesh need to be obtained without undue delay. It is intenacd to show b'r this statement of the relative val ues of the atticles named that seven pounds of oats or corn are equal in flesh-making value to a hundred atnd fifty pounds of the roots named.
