DEATH OF Mn. CALviN GiBsON.
The Columbia Register of.Friday con
tains the annoucemont of the death of
Mr. Calvin Gibson, which took place
on Thursday. Mr. Gibson was a na
tive, and for nearly his whole life a
resildit, of Fairfield county. He was
a farmer by occupation, and enjoyed
the esteem of his frlends and neigh
bore. le had reached the advanced
age of seventy-onke years.
TiE METINo oF CITIZENS.-An ad
o'uried meeting of the citizens was
hold on Wednesday night to consider
the matter of buylig a steaIk fire On
gine. Mr. Wharton, of thu La France
Steam Fire Enigine Company, made,
on request, an intelligent qid inter
esting statement in regard to steam
fire engines. Mr. Hucy offered a reso
lution to the effect that it was the
sense of the meeting that the Town
Council should purchase the steamer
-getting the best engine for the least
money. After some debate, the reso
lution was rejected by a vote of twen
ty-ono nays to twenty yeas. The
Ineoting then adjourned.

the Other Convicted.
At the opening of Court on Thurs
day morning, the case of the State vs.
Jesse Barber, as priicipal, and Isaac
Barbor, as accessory, charged with the

Mr. A. M. Mackey appeared for the
defence. After twelve challenges by
the defen(lants and two by the State,

ed, and that for the defelce was given
as follows:
Daniel Ialt, Jr., recalled: I was at
the biquest. There was a good deal
of feelifg and interest shown. Ileard
Fannic Ifall's testimionv. I did not
hear her say anything about Isaac's
remark about "seeing all and knowing
all", or about his saying if lie had fifteeli
dollars lie would leave, or about his
being in a 1eap of trouble.-X. She
looked itiad, aiid testified oily in re
ply to direct.qustions. Nobody ask
her if Isaac spoke about money, no
about his leaving. She seemed re
luctant to testify.
S. It. Johnston, recalled: After in
quest I issued a wasrant for Turner
haill and had him before me on the
following Thursday. I let hint go
home. Hc came back Saturday, and
his father brought Fannic I1'all. It
was then, for the first time, that she
spoke about what Jesse said about the
fifteen dollars.
N. C. Barber, sworn: I know
Jesse Barber. .Ils character for
peaceableness is tolerable fiair, I be
T. F. Curlee, sworn: I let Jesse
Barber have a pistol. This [the one
put in evidene] is the pistol. (Evi
dence as to what the defendant said
he wanted the pistol for was ruled out;
and defendant's counsel excepted.)
Jesse Barber, defcitdant. sworn:
Oi the Sunday night wlcii Mack was
killed, I came through John Mobley's
place. I called at Mack's house. I
said, "Iow (10 you come on, Uncle
Mack?" "I'm well, how do you do ?"
I said "I want to give you satisfaction
about the watermtelons you said I
stole." Ile said, "If you don't get
away, I'll fix you so that
you'll have to be moved away".
I wouldn't go to the door, because he
kept tools about him. I was sitting
down. I had my pistol in my hand.
IIe said "Damn you, don't vou come
inl". I got up and pointedl the pistol,
and as I rose up, in pulling back the
hammer it went oil'. 1. never wanited
to kill him. I did not have any idea
of killing him. We lived on the same
planitationl. I left the pistol at Mr.
Gladdlen's omi Monday iorniing. I
told hin I vanted him to keep it till I
came for it. The reason I didnti't carry
it homo was this: When Mack Perrv
hollered I didn't know he was shot;
I left the pistol because it was not
loaded, and I didn't wiant to carry it
about with nie. I never told a soul
I was going to Mack Perry's house
that night. -X. At the inquest I sa-id I
hind ]cnt the pistol to a gentleinn on
the Saturday night before. I denied
that I shot Mack Perry. I don't re
collect whether 1. said I didi't. know
anthming about it. I said I staid tlat
night at Nelson Davis' house. I de
inied that I had been on the place
where Mack Perry lived, that niight.
Whenh the shlooting occurred it was a
while before the 'mooni went down.
