[REPORTED FOR TuE NBWs PUD HERALD.J For nearly half a century, with the exception nf a few years during the war, Erskine College has exerted a power in tie State s'vond to none of the institutions of learning which de pend principally upon some particular religious denomination for ilnancial support and patronage.. Founded un der the auspices of Ithe Associate Re formed Church, and organized to meet. its particular iwants, but not limited in its patronage to this particular de nomination, site has to-day reached an aoinenco as creditable to those in charge of the College as itisgratifving to its pntrons. It has annually sent out graduates who will not suffer by comparison with those of other col leges; and its alunni have adorned prominent positions in both Church and .8tate. The 30th day of June was the fortieth an imtial conmmnencement day inl the history of the College, and on that day elevena souls were tilled with pride and happiness as they received their diplomas from tile anaids of the cultur ed and distinguished president, the Rev. At. an early hour the stage was occupiel by the teachers and pnpils of tMe Collige, and the usual proraiimmo was enrried out.. Sonic of the essays wr'ere unnsually fine, and those in 'Latin and; Frenbi were .specialhy interesting. The music was of the best. kind, aid sliowed great skill in the perfor'mj'es. ''he degrees were conferred by Professor, now President, J. P. Kentedy, who inade an exceedingly appropriitte address to the young lady graduates, At night tilere was a receptiotn at the Female College, and in soine r'e spects this proved to be the miost de lightful featire of cozmmoncement week- that is to tie young people. Unpid did some hard work on that occasion, and it would be impossible to attempt an enumeration of the killed and wounded.
