'HE VErz LA TEMT.
Itecent Symptots are Rather Unfavorable.
(Special Dispatch to The News and Herald.)
COLUIBIA, July 4.-Telegrams re
velved by the Register during the day
Indicate that whilst the condition of
the President. Is extremely critical,
there are yet strong reasons for hope
of his recovery. At noon. one of the
surgeons expreRsed tlie opillion that
the next twenty-four hours will deter
mine whether the case will prove fatal
or not. .
COLUinIA. 7.30, P. M.-The Regis
fer has received the following, dated
Washington, 6.20, p. im.:
There is a btrong feelilg outside of
the White House that tile Presi
dent's condition is more critical at
this time than . it has yet been.
'This iipression rests undoubt
-edly oil remarks made privately
by those -who are conversaiit Nith the
case, and whose avenues of inifrma
Con are of the best possible character.
Physicians inl attendance are ditfering.
The anxiety which has been very ill
tense all the afiarnooin, has certainly
,deepened a great deal in the last hour,
aid the gravest alpprelensionis are C
tertained of a atal issue.
Nevw AdvertiRenents.
Masonic Meeting-G. B. MeCants,
Secretary.
-Tile next meeting of the Fairfleld
division of survivors of the Sixth
Regiment, S. C. V., will be held next
Monday. A full attendance is desired.
FAIRFIELD TEACIiIEs' Assoc.vrION.
-The Fairfleld. Teachers' Association
meets in Whitnboro on Friday the
15th of July. Tile subject of plionet
ics will be continued, and Mr. B. It.
Sc'Ott will explain the principles of
punctuation. The "picnic" will still
form part of the proceedings, but
teachers comiig from a distance, and
finding it inconydnient to bring an1y
thing with them, ieed not be deterred
from attending the meeting on .this
account. Tile ncetings hfnve been
steadily Increased ill atteilalice and
interest, and promise to form an - im
portait feature ill tie Fairileld school
System.
PICNICKING AT ORIEENVILLE.-Dr.
Boyd, School Comnmissionler, suggests
a plan by which teachers and all oh
ers itterested can attend tile listitute
at Greenville with little expeise, and
much pleasure. His idea is to form a
Wagon party to go across the couitry
to Greenville, and then to camp out on
Paris Mloultaill or inl solinc plelsait
place iln tile suburbs, and coime ini
every day to the cit y. Ini thmis wvay nlot
only Greenville can be takenm in, but
excursions can be made to Cmsar's
Head and all thle other' well knownl
mounltain resorts, for a slight addition
to tile ordinary expense5 of' staying at
hiome. By August cr'ops will have
been laid by, and horse flesh will be
abundant. Dr. Uoyd's suggestion is a
happy inspiration. It is worth consid
ering inot only by teachers but biy anly
- body else whlo yvishies to get awany
from tile hot summner for a while.
A t the teacher' mneetinlg oil fih 15th
of July details of the plan can be talk
ed over, and tile parties can be mnade
up.
It is useless to speak of thle salni
brity and beauty of Greenville. Situ
ated in sighlt of tile mountain~s, it is
one of the mrost picturesqume towns1 iln
the Union, atnd the climate is comupara
tively cool during August. No more
delight ful meanis of comblinitlg leas
ure wvith profit can be secured thlan
-this Institute afl'ords, and it should be
largely patronized. in these progres
sive days, teachers whoe (d0 not "pro
gress" wvill find themelves left behinid.
M'r. ZION ScInoot.-Trhe sessionl of
Mt. Zion Schoeol enlded oil Thursday,
June 30th. lauimr11 thle last week, pu1
pils5 in tile three hig~hes t grades wvere
examlined by written exalinintionms.
No foruma exercises were onm thle pro
grammne, butt. toow close wvas marked by
a pleasant affa2ir'-thme presenltation1 of
sonmc gifts to tile teachmers by thle pupIls
unde11r thir respiective chlarge. Thouse
to tile hadies wvere made informllyl,
but at the close of school, Mark Doety,
in behalf of the sclhlrs, Camne for'ward
with a box, the contents of which he
begged Mr. Davis t~o accept as a token
of esteemn anid respet on the part of the
the pupils Idividually anid collective
ly, and made a few remarks, showing
whlat should be tile ne0w relationis of
teachler an~d pupil, and thenm remember
ing thlat Mt. Zioni is known through all
tile South by tile former p~upils, aind
that it rests as muchl with the pupils
as tile teachers to maintain her eredhit.
School was then dismissed, and( the
usual hanldshlaking and good-byes In
dulged in. The prlesenlts were as fol
lows: For tihe princeipal, a dozenl sil
vor plated Rodgers' dinnier kniives,
and a 1)earl-handled1 pocket-kniife', en'
graved. For Miss Obear, a silver cup
