At aft early hour the pupils assembled at the Acadenmy, with a few of their pa I rents and other visitors. The reetta tions and readings of compositions were very little varied fRom the use al weekly exercises. The mingling of a few additional songs, suited to the occasion, gave more interest. Imme diately after their close, a procession was formed, which marched to the es tablished picnio ground of this place, in Capt. K.'s wood-lot near a delight ful spring. While waiting for the spread of the inviting repast, Capt. K. started the little boys in a play which amused anid entertained all. In fact he was host for the day, contributing especill to the pleasure of tle young. AlI did full justice to the many good things prepared tljr the occasion. In the afternoon, the company divided into squads-the little ones to the Acadamy for plays, the older ones to Dr. 0. and elsewhiere, for music, the greater part, and the most interesting to me, assembled at Capt. K.'s, where, in lively conversation and games, $he. time passed off rapidly. Altogether, the day was much enjoyed. Thanks to the patrons and our gonial principal and assistant. A Pupi. or "M. A." SoUTuHmuaI RAILROAD) EXTENSTONS. I* was. annoncd that Col. E.' W. Cole, of Teminessee, has-formed in this city a syndicate for the purchase of - extensive railroad interests. The scheme enabraces the establishment of a co'mprehonsive sy'stemn from the Northwest and Soutinvest to the At landic coast by the purchase of exist. lng lile's and the bumilding of new ones. Purchases have alrea(ly been conclud ed of the Macon and Ilrunswick road, of Georgia; the East Tenncsaoe and Virginia system of roads, enbracing 619 miles; the Selnma, Rome and Dal ton, and the Memphis and Charleston roads, covering in all about 1,800 miles. Contracts for the building of several hundred niles will at once be let, it is said, and the various systems connected. The syndicate has sub I scribed sixteen millions, among the capitalists who are named in the syn dicate being George P. Seney, Samuel Thomas, Calvin 8. Brice, E. 'H. R. Lv man and John S. Martin. Colonel Cole will be made president of the united systems of roads and will have charge of the extension by purchase and building. It is understood th kt the syndicate is willing to take the one-fifth of the stock of the East Ten nesseo and Virginia road yet unpur chased at the price paid for the .four ffths, if the holders desire it.-N.
