road. Had they prevented the South
Carolina Poad from getting into the
courts, it could have made most ad
vantageous combinations. As it is,
Charleston is almost completely
''ditched around." This is not the way
to do business. We are interested in
the welfare of Charleston. We wish
to see her tle largest and wealthiest
city on the South Atlantic Coast. But

TEXARKANA, April 2.--When I left
South Carolina for Texas 1if1teon
months ago, I promised a good many
of my friends to write and let them,
hear something about tbis country. I
have put this off from Hime to lime,
waiting until I could see more or the
plarO and the people. I will now
write a few lines for your valuable
paper, which comes like a ray of sun
shine Into our office once a week.
I like Texas very much indeed. The
hospitality of the people is very Cor
dial. Ii many place*s society is yet
doubtless very unseofled, and people
have not been settled long elough to
accunulate the comforts which time
alone Call bring; but I Mid as fine
people in this place as I have ever
seen anywhere. In nothing perhaps
are people so 'greatly mis represented
as in this. The Impression prevails
that Texas has been set tled largely by
renegades from the halter in older
States, but after a year's Bojourn with
the good people here, I take pleasure
in correcting it. We have sin here as
everywhore else. Evidences of it are
to be seen everywhere; but the Chris
tais are fighting it bravely. The
clarion soumd of the gospel Can be
heard in the lipulpiievery Suinday. The
Suniiday law is enforced, and the
trienids o llaw and order approve it
lhart ily.
I stin in the mercantile business in
Texarkana. So flr we are succeeding
