that attracts all shades of~ tastes. By
early candle-light on Tuesday night an

on the other. Fair maidens and ma
troily housewives lent their pres~ence
and services to enhance the attractive
ness of the scene, and were assiduouis
in their attention to the waints of all.

couples showed i si'ong prefeenc
for the back seats, soruewhat removed
from the crowd, and the bencles on
one side seened to be specially suited
to a quiet tete-adtete. This arralige
ment may have been accidental, but it
bore the ear marks of ca'eibt design.
A few couples even betook themselves
to a promenade by starlight, perhaps
to study astronoiy, may be to escape
suflocation in the hall. We were struck
with tie fact that the 13. P. U. were
out lin full force and judging from the
conduct ol'several of them we opine
that the Prosecuting Attorney will
have a good miany indictilents to hand
in at the next "Session." The "Devil"
suggests that the P. A. may have to be
indicted also. The Art gallery was a
special feature of the festival, and at
tracted many lovers of high art.
Whether this was dac to the fair pro
prietors, or the merits of the specilnens
of art, we will refer to our' bachelor
friends. Where there was so. much to
clain the attention of our reporter, a
full notice is hardly practicable, but
we Inust not omit to mention the pig
show which seemed to af'ord consider
able aiMsclOnt to the small boys.
The enterininent, we are gratilled to
say, was a coipleto success ill every
way, and we congriatilate our Metho
list friends on the satisfactory result of
their eflorts. The net amount realized,
about a hundred and sixty dollars,
speaks well for the liberalitiy of the
conmiiunity, anld is all Ilhe niore w~el
cone in that it was so deservedly
earned.
-Jay Gould speaks highly of the
South. The railroads are imlproving,
ftruit culture is a big thing inl Florida,
and thie alligator crop is still abund
ant. Ii speaking furtiher of' the South
Mr. Gould said: "I was muore pleased

visited. It is a beauti'ul place, anid

days. Augusta, too, is thriving. It
looks like a New Euglaid town, with
its tianuuthetories. There is a cotton
mill ill process of completion there

two equal instalments, ais follows: The
first instalment shall be due and payable
from the first day of May to the first, day
of June, 1881. and the second instalment
shall be due and payable from the fif
teenth day of Septomnbe to the thirty
first (lay of October, 1881: Provided, That
it shall bej and is hereby, left to the op
tion of atiy person either to pay the
amount of the first in taliont at the time
first mentioned, or to pay the whole
amouTit at tihe time of the payment of the
second instalment thereof: Provided fur.
ther, That if any person whosoevoe' shall
fail or refuse to pay his or her taxc duo
under the first instalment he, sho or they
sliall be charged with a penalty of five
per centtin on the finrt institalment, which
pen1rdty shall be added."
The Treasurer is authorized to receive
in payment of the above taxes only gold
and silver coin, United State3 currency,
National Bank notes and (oupons, which
shall become payablo during the year
1881 on the valid consolidated Bonds of
this State, known as "Brown Bonds."
Jury tickets and the por diem of State
witnesses in the Circuit Court will be re
ceived for County Ta%aea, not including
School Taxes.
