and woody, and utterly worthless for
culinary nurposes. We have heard the
question asked repeatedly, what makes
the shoots curl? but very few have
been able or willing to answer. The
tubject Ia oftoe been brought up in
agricultural conventions, without brin
ging out much information that has
proved satisfactory to the Inexperl
enced. Now, from our own experience
and observation, as well as from con
versing with a low of the most success.
-ul growers of this vegetable, we are
led to conclude that orooked and curl.
ed asparagus shoots are alwayq ro
duced in consequence of some injury
to the shoot while It Is pushing up
[ through the soil. It may be caused by
raking the bed, or by digging it over
with forks, as ti often practiced In the
spring of the yoar. And it may be
.done by carelessness while cutting the
e shoots. The .least cut, braise or scratch
4 made.up on the side of a shoot stops
growth on that'side. iThere Is an effort
to heal the wound, but so far as the
value of the shoot is concerned, it is
always a failure. If any One doubts
the truth, of this statement, he can
easily satisfy himselt' by simply caus
Ing an Injury to a growing shoot be
fore It gets above tie surface. Much
care should be used both In digging and
raking over asparagus beds in spring,
and also when cutting for the table.
There Is nothing coming from the gar
den in May that is a greater luxury to
those who like It, thn asparagus, and
It 1 wt11 to know how beet to handle

REMEDY FOR LOCKJAw.-Let any one
who has an atteec of look-jair take a
smail quantity of turpentine, warm it
and pour it on the wound, no matter
where the wound is, and relief will
follow In less thain a minute. Noth
ing better can be appliel to a severe
out or bruise than cold turpentine; it
will aive oert'in relief almost instant
ly. Turpentine is also a sovereign
remedy for eroup. Saturate a ylece
of flannel on the throat and chest, and
in every severe case three or four
drons ou a lump of sugar may be
taken inwardly. Every family shuu:d
have a bottle on hand.
LIP-SALVI.-An elegant lip salve
may be made I the following simple
manner: Put half a pound of fresh
lard into a pan, with an ounce and a
half of white wax; set oil a slow fire
till It is melted; then take a small tin
dish, dll it with water, and add a few
chips of alkanet root; let the water
boll till it becomes of a beautiful red
color; strain soine of it, and mix It
with the other Ingredients according
as may be desired; scent it with some
agreeable and favorite extract, and
then pour into smnall white Jars or
boxes.

BATIH BuNs.--Tako one pound of
flour to one-thir of it add in a hole in
the centre a tablespoonful of yeast and1
a teacupful of warni inilk, let It stand
for an hour In a warm place to rise.
When risei, add six ounces of butter
and four eges, with the rest of
the flour, six ounces of sugar, and a q
little pounded cinnamon to taste; mix <
all well together, cover it over and <
let it rise aalin. Shape it into buns, I
leaving it as rough as possible; sift I
some sugar 8an1 a few comilts on the I
top, sprinkle with a little water, and t
bake in a moderate oven on well-but- <
tered tins.
