North-bound passenger, 12.18 p. in.;

TUE PEABODY FUND.--Dr. $. L. M,
Curry, the general agent of the Pea
body Fund, was in Columbia lasi
week, and spent aday with the super
intendent of education in consulting
with regard to the best means to be
adopted to aid the public schools ol
the State. He stated to Colonel
Thompson, that he intended adhe'ring
to the established rule, not to assist
schools which were not kept open nilue
months of the year. 1is motto is to
"help those who help themselves."
It. is understood that.aid will be given
from the Peabody Fund to such pub
lie schools as comply with the condi.
