Climbing over the hills, every extra
pound la against the owner. If a load
Is stalled i the road we always lower
the hitch to lift the load, iand draw
down the team to Increase their fore
foothold. and wove on without more de
lay. 'I he usual size wagon may be just
right for large horses and tall men,
but farmers' boys and teams generally
are neither large nor heavy. The
pitcher on in the field determints the
amount of the day's work. A low wa
gon Is easter to load therefore quicker
loaded with a shorter fork handle than
common. The bay and grain rack
with eight inch side pieces may be
made level by putting a low guard
over the hind wheels. This, too keeps
the man on the ground and will go to
the field and bring a given number of
shocks of hay or grain quicker than a
high built wagon or rack can, thus
making more hay while the sun shines.
It is lighter on muddy roads; if the
team sinks the downward draft, is less
on the low wheels. If they lilt up with
dirt they hold less than larger ones,
They are not good to back heavy loads
the wheels hug the ground. "You
can't make a farn pay with too many
legs under the kitchen table."

TAStLu CLQTU EMROIDERY.-When
these covers are intended for a long
table, the ends should be out out like
a lamberquin or valance. They nay
be made of velvet, cloth, or reps, and
can have genuine embroidery, or ap
pliques. A border should be carried
along each side, with sprays dotted
here and there through the center, a
large group being obligatory at each
broad end scallop finish with heavy
cord all rountl, with rich tassel on th:
points. For square clottis, the four
corners must be decorated alike, and
it is well to have the lengthened
sprays almost meet on each of the
sides so that the embroidery will be
nerly continuous-place sprays at
f qual distances so as to form a large
otro e; as a change, nothing is required
for the true center. For these cloth,
silk or woolen tops, velvet or plush,
can be used. If Of this last material
the flowers may be painted In water
colors instead of being embroidered.
BROWN BREAD.-Two cupfuls of
sweet milk, two cupfuls of sour milk,
into which put one teaspoonful of
cllemically pure soda, one cupful of
dark molasses, two and a half cupfuls
of rye or Graham flour, two and a half
cupfuls of coarse Indian meal, and a
little salt. Mix thoroughly, and then
put in a round deep pan, made for the
purpose, seven inches in diameter at
the top, and five and one half inches
deep. Cover the bottom of the pan
with a piece of paper well buttered ,or
it will not come out. Then steam it
over a kettle of hot water for three
hours. Thenibake half an hour in the
range oven. It Is very nice toasted
tho second day.

A BATCHY Ol's lUDDINo. - Four
ounces grated bread, four ounces cur
rants, tour ounces apples, two ounces
sugar, three eggs, a few drops of
essence of lemon, a little grated nut
meg. Pare, core, and mince the ap
ples finely-ufliclent, when minced,
Lo make four ounces; add to these the
currants, which should be well wash
ed, the grated bread and sugur; whisk
the eggs, beat these up witn the re
maining Ingredients, and when all is
Lhoroughly Imixed, put the pudding
in to a buttered basin, tie it dow n vith
a cloth, and boll tor three hours.
