"At your service, gentlemen." "You are doubtless acquainted with the Orkney Islands, where the wild fowls breed in the clifts of the rocks, 'hie fishermen fasten a stick at the end of a long rope, which is well ge cured to the brow of the cllits, and then placing one of their number as uride the stiek, lie is lowered down the precipice in search of the game. You have most likely heard the account of tie man who in striking at the birds with an iron-plated boat staff, as they flow from their holes, cut two of the strands of the rope that suspended him between heaven and earth." "Below h im was certain death-above him a terrile wall of rock that seemed to reach the sky. Ile gave the signal for hauling up by striking the rope twice with his staff. Never did his' comrades pull the line so lazily. Slow iy,slowly dragged the rope over the edge of the cliff, while the several strands seemed to fly upward with the rapid ity of though t. Every instant he d read ed that a weak place in the remaining portion would be untwisted, and so certain appeared his doom that he felt that every foot lie advanced up the face of the precipice would but increase the height of his fall. A sudden pause in the motion stiruck him with a new fear-when the untwisting part of the rope caie into the hands of the fisher men above, they at once pe ceived ils danger and instantly lowered another line. Tle fowler was rescued fion his peril, but such was the ell'ect of his terror during the few minutes of his frightful ascension, that his (lark brown hair wias changed to gray.'' Of tils latter class of causes may be mentioned insuflicient or bad arrangement of light in stables; blink ers: high racks for feeding; ammonna finles in the stalls,.and tile whip. Al though the eye of the horse Is well ad apted for seeing at night, yet lie is not a noctural aninal, therefore the stable should have dtyliglit freely admnittedl to it. A dimlylighted stable imposes on the horse sudden changinig from twilight to broad sunligit, whiclh can not fall to weaken the sight. It the windows tare arraniget on one side or the other of a stall, the horse's head will be directed mostly to the side froi which the light comes; one eye will be more in the shade than the other, con sequently both eyes will be strained fron being exposed to unequal light. If the window is directly in front of tho stall, a glare of light 18 directed toward the eyes with a blinditig eflect, whleh is very Inj urlous. Probably the best arrangemnent for lighting stables is by iieans ofi a skylight or windows placed near the coiling. Muchli has been said against blinkers, yet their use continues to a considlerable exten t. If the eyes of the horse, like those of nin, were directed forward, blinkers might prove unconfortable but not injurious. The range of vision in tile horse is niuch greater thain lin man ; by limiting this rauge of vision matid allow ing it a forward direction only-which is not according to nature-the mus cles of the eyes become strained and their strenigth uipaired. It is not reasonable to suppose that tie timid, nervotis horse, that starts at every ini usual sight or sound, would be in spired with more conidlence if allowed to ses all there was to be seen tihiin if' straining tie eyes pain fully to se ob jects terrible t. hin just back of the blinkers.
