was occupied with civil cases of no
general interest. Court adjourned
for the term at four o'clock inl the
afternoon, and Judge Fraser left for
his houuon the southern-bound train.
Mr. It. J. McCar-ley is prepared to
furnish several first-class brands of
fertilizers either for cash, on time, or
on tile cotton-option plant. Farmers
will do well to give him a call before

The County Commissioners are
making all necessary arrangeimients to
have the public roads thoroughly
worked. They have appointed super
intendeits and have given them all
the informlation needed for a thorough
repair of all the highways in the
county.
Mr. Joseph Groesclel is laviltg his
store (thle one formerly occupied by
Sol. Wolfe) repainted and refitted,
and when finished it will be one of the
handsomest in town. Mr. Groeschel
wvill sooni leave for New Y~ork, where
he will lay ifl a full stock of dry goods,
clothing, hats, shoes, etc., for the
spring trade. When ne gets his store
filled as lie expects, it will be a good
place to make p~urchlase.

running from two to fonur mionths ando

jury to the cause of education, inuas

Souiern people, and yet. we have
scarcely toiched it. But why toes
this work belong peculiarly to the
Soutlhern people? Because they once
belonged to us, and their ancestors
spent their lives in our service. Be
cause they verc peaceable and quiet
dur'ing the war, and obedient to oulr
mothers, wives amd (llughter1s, when
fathers, sons and brothers were ill the
field, andl([, as inany of them believed,
lighting ngainst th'ir emancipiation.

They must work our lands or they
imist lie fallow. We are tinder obli

get all the work wo can out of them.

But here I am sorry to say that my
observation and experience lead me to

resolutions ill tleir intimation that

enemly to our State. Ecaucation gives
to both white and black influence.
Both may wield this influence for a
bad purpolse, but their education does
no.t iake them bad ; they atire bad ini
spite of' it. It' education makes thie
negr'o wvorse, it must, by par'ity of
r'easoing, make the white man worse
also, Lnless tlie humnanity' of the negro
be (enied. Before thie war hu'iidreds
of' our wvealthy~ people1 educated house
servants; did it make them wvorse? If
so, why did they (do it? But in this
argumenit it may be said I am Lusing
an ambIIig'uOus middle term, i. e., in
one premise uintg the wor'd "'educate"
in 0one scuse, and( ill thme other premise
ulsinig it. ini another sense. No; I uise
the term in its trute sense in both
premises ; thbat is, in the sense of' train
