to prievent these little pests from get
ting into the sugar bowl, it was sur
rounded by wvater. Finding that this

predatory inicursions, he sat antd
'watched to observe in what way the
ants htad overcome the difficulty.
Presently oneo of thtb ants camne down
to the water. and boldly plnigintg in,
waited at the edge. Not long after,
another anit, bearing a grain of sugar,
followed, and when it reached thte
wvater, perched itself uiponm the first
anit's back, andl was ferriled acr~oss to
the opposite edge, htoldinmg its precious
burdeni enrefully out of' the water all

every other known capacity, we have
never heard of their actIng as ferry
men before.
FORFEITED LANDS.-An important
notice from the County Treasurer. up
pears in another column. The Act of
the Legislature under which he pro
ceeds Is as follows:
Be enacted, etc., That all lands now
on the list of delinquent lands and all
lands heretofore fortlted to the State
for thme noHn-payment of taxes, and
which have not been sold for taxes or
reclahned, may be redeemed by the
owners of such lands, or those claim
ilg under or through such owners or
those having a legal or equitable right
or interest thterein, on the payment of
the taxes which may be due and un
paid thereon with costs but without
penalties: ProvNed, That said pay
ment shall be made on or before the
31st day of May, 1881, in gold or silver
coin, United States Treasury notes or
National Bank notes: And provided,
further, That this Act shall nlot apply
to any lands whieh, by virtue of any
Act of the General Assembly, have al
ready become assets of the' State in
charge of the Sinking Fund Connis
sion.
Approved December 24, 1880.
Under this Act all lands forfeited
previous to the delinquent-land sales
of 1878 and 1879 may be redeemed
up011 the payment of the taxes and
costs-the penalty being remitted.
The sale of delinquent lands (for non
payment of taxes of 1879-80), which
should take place on the 1st of Februa
ry, has been postpoLned until further
orders from the Comptroller.
