fall of snow began, wvhich lasted
through th~e greater part of Wednes

made it lively with snow.balls for
those whoe had the temerity to-venture

the ola story of "Intimidation."
The parties went down to Colum- e

before United States Coninissioner

It is a little curious that Colonel
John F. Hobbs, of Lexington, should
turn up as a United States marshal.
Hobbs announced himself last summer
A candidate for the Democratic nomi
nation for Solicitor of the Fifth Cir
cuit. The nominating convention was
duly held, and the Lexington delega
tion voted solidly for Mr. Hobbs for
many ballots. Finding that therp was
no chance for his nomination, they
very sensibly went over to somebody v
else. Major R. 0. Bonham, of Edge- c
field, finally received- the nominition.
A few weeks after, Mr. Hobbs pub
lished a lengthy card, alle,'"mg ir- I
regularities in the make-up of the con- I
vetion, and demAnding the convoca
toit of another. Of course nobody
took any notice of such impudence,
and Mr. Hobbs at once announced
himself as an "Independent" candi- t
date. At the election he received* the 11
Radical vote, but was of course beat- P
en. Since then lie has been going
about the upper counties, in the role
of an United States mqrshal, hobnob
bing with dirty Radical negroes, and
earning a tbw dollars by arresting
innocent gentlemen upon charges a
trumped up by lying negroes and de
feated Radicals. With this .statement
of Mr. Hobbs' recent career, it is easy
to understand why lhe is acceptable to
the Uadieal leaders, in helpitng them
hi the dirty work now engaging their
attention.
