The county treasurer is getting a
little breathing spell after his work.
Subscribers will please remember
that the end of the year is approachinfg
and the printers need money.
Mr. J. L. Miinaugh has a new and
attractive advertisement in this morn

should call and see him.
SCUooL MEETING.-It is time that
the voters of this school district were
holding a meeting to levy a local tax
for next year. The proceedings must
begin with a petition to the Trustees
for a.meeting.
The L9gislature meets in ColusIbia
to-day. -It has much importapt work
before.it. The delegation from Fair
field went down on yesterday and will
be on hand promptly at the organiza
tion of the two branches-the Renate
and the House of Representatives.
CUT. IN A GIN.-It was reported in
Winsboro on Saturday that Mr. WRW
11am B. Douglass, who lives in the
western portion of the county, had his
hand cut in a cotton gin. We have
not heard the particulars, but hope
the accident is not of a serious nat ure.
The State Board of Canva'ssers. after~
hearing argument . on both sides,
counted the Haut Gap and Black Oak
boxes, from Charleston county, over
which so munch fuss hats been made by
the Radicals. This, however, does
not chanmge the resulit of them electionr in
that county and it tvilTf, conseqnently,
have a Democratic delegation in the
Legislature. The action of the various
County Boards, in all the other coun
ties, was flily sustained by the State
1Board. "That do settle it," as the
Radical doctrine is that there is no
going behind the "returns."~
8ALE. oF BUGGIEs.-A let of new
buggies was sold se anction on Satur
day, and at prices that seem marvel
lonsly low down. Open buggies were
sold at forty- two dollars and top bug
gfes as low as fifty-six dollars. Mr..
W.. A' Hlufiman, represenvting th'e
large buggy establishiment of Lsouis
Cook, of Cinefnnati, was .the auction
eer; and Saturday's work shows that
lhe understands his business. A lauyge
lot of buggies -of the same make was
sold in Fairfield last yeur, and we be
lieve they have given general satisfac

.RUN OFF.-he northern-boundpas

hours on Sunday. This was caused by
the run off'er breaking: dowW of' the
southern-boun'd morning train near

THE COTTON MARKET.-There0 was
an advance in the price of .'otton - on
Saturday which was firmer . on .Monb
day, and we have reason to hope that
It will continue at or above tenl centd.
Winnsboro is unequaled, 'as a cotton
market, by any town In the' up coun
try. There are both local and foi'eign
buoyers here who give the very out
side prices-sometimes even higher
prices than dati bo obtained 4i cJolum.
ba. . Otir merchants 'receive the latest
cotton news 'by wit'b tWo- or' thi'ee
times per day, and are thuq enabled
to give their customers the benefit of
the very latest advance In the market.
Planters who look to their own inter
ests cannot afford to go to other places
when so much liberality can be ob
tained at home. We are not :disposed
to recommend this uaftket in a spirit
of bo~sting, but simply desire o11r
friends who haya cotton to sell to
know that Winnsboro is determined
to lead the cotton markets of the up
country.
