facts may be gathered from the testi
mony that will be eiturtainig as well
as iimterestiog.
In Oxford two pounds, or ten dol
lars in money, seems to have been the
ruling price for votes, and it. was paid
readily by either side; but the more
common plan was for soie emplover
to hire as many ien as lie could' at
from six to soven shillings per day.
As one witness said. who had upwards
of 100 mien engaged, some were set to
work on land, some to watch other
men, and some to (o niothing. Somec
watched the employer's house, others
watched opposition houses, others
guarded po es and flaar., others tore
flown Liberal bills antI stuck up Con
servative ones. Seyeral hunbred
potinds Were expended by one mail in)
this way. Hie took no receipts, nior
was the monley handed to himt by ot1h
ers than strangers, who brought
whole bags of gold to him and went
their way. Of course the men hired
