Day passenger, northward, 1.00 p. m.;
southward, 5.12 p. In. Night passen
ger, northward, 12.20 a. m.; south
ward, 8.59 p. m. Day freight, north
ward. 8.55 a. in.; southward, 12.40
p. m. Night freight, northward, 2.38
a. m.; southward, 10.85 p. n.-This
schedule is on the basis of Washing
ton time, which is about fifteen minutes
ahead of Winnsboro time.
A SAOn OPINION.-The Newvs and
Courier has been trying to get the
views of prominent business meni in
Charleston, upon the late Presidential
election. Among those who expressed
themselves is Mr. F. J. Pelzer, presl
dent of the Atlantic Phosphate Com
pany, whose views are reported thus:
Mr. Pelzer said lie had not given the
subject much thought and didii't desire
to give an opinion. lie was not de
vpondent of the future, however. Ills
phosphate company had sold all their
produce and lie expected to sell as
much next year.
We have received a copy of the - an
nmual catalogue of the Thornwell Or
.phanage, located at- Clinton, Laurens
county, and conducted by the Rev. W.
P. Jacobs. This Institution has been
in successful operation for several
years, and has done much good. The
children who are inmates are furnished
With a good conmoin-school education,
and are also trained in differeit depart
ments of labor-farming, house-work,
paluting, printing, etc. The catalogue
is the work of some of the boys-they
having done all the type-settig aid
press-work. This institution deseeves
well of the State, and it should .be
liberally sustaincdd.
THE STATE F AIR.-Every thing prom
ises that the State Fair this week will be
a grand success. The Agricultural So
ciety has made unusual eilorts to at
tract exhibits, and the number and
variety will probably be lettr thn in
any preceding year. The Columblia
Board of rade, wvith conmmendable
enterprise, has added largely to the
preminnms oflered by the Society, and
the ~pdoble of Cdlumbia hawve made
ample preparations for the entertain
mnent of visitors. Altogether, every
thing p'rmises that the Fair will be
-more largely attended and miore gen
erally successful than any previons
one. The Charlotte, Columbia & Au
gueta Railroad Company will sell
round-trip from the di fferent stations,
as follows: Blackstock, $2.10; Wood
ward's, $2.05; White Oak, $1.86;
Adger's, $1.70; Winsboro, $1.50;
Simpson's, $1.30; Ridgeway, $1.05;
Bllythewood, 75c.
All articles intended for exhibition
(race horses excepted) will be trans
ported free, Prepay freight at ship
ping poInt, and upon presentation of
receipted freight bill, and certificate of
.Secretary of Fair Association that the
article has been exhibited, mnoney will
be refbnded.

The majority of the planters of this
section are through gathering their
corn, which has turned out better thanm
was expected, but It is still short of
the produce of last year, one-half to
two-thirds being the average crop.
Cotton is somewhat better than the
above-named crop, but it would also
admit of Improvement in order to
equal last year's yield. Pease in gen
eral turns out short. Turnips and
potatoes are exceedingly fine. Thme
presenit wet weather prevents potatoes
from being dug.
Some little sickness prevails through
out the community, principally chills
and fever. We are pained to learn of
the Illness of Mr. Robert Aiken, one
-of our oldest and most esteemed citi
zens, who has been confiued to bed for
several weeks In a very painful condi
tion, Mr. Aiken has been one of the
ruling elderR of Lebanon Presbyteian
Church and superintendent of the
Sabbath School for many years, anmd Is
now greatly missed by theo congrega
tion. We hope soon to hear of hisa
recovery, and to see him agai In our
midst.
The~ public road from Winnsboro to
Salem, and almost every public road,
Is becoming so narrow In many places
that it is almost impossible for two ve
hicles to pass each othier without damn
ger of collision. Something should be
done by the road hanuds to remedy this
evil.
Much lmnprovemenmt is now being
made i; the matter of ginning. The
"toot" of station'ary engInes cani be
hoard on every hand. New engies
have been p~ur'chased bp Captain Wm.,
H-erron aind Air. James Lemnmon. The
. glnners \aro all, I believe, doinga

A large quantity of grain is ex
pocted tp be platited, espcially oats,
owing to. the shortiness of- the corn
crop. Planters will begin immediate
ly after the wet weather is over.
The 8tate Fair,, which is expected to
come off next week, I think, will
b' largely attended by the people from
this neighborhood. We hoptb, also, to
see Winnsboro well represented. May
those who attend find their visit both
pleasant aud profitable. VIDErn.
TIHE TRACHERP' ASSOCIATION.
. Messrs. Editors: Permit me to cor
rect your notice of the next Teachers'
Association. I agree thal we may ex
poet an Interesting and profitable time,
from which no teacher can afford to be
absent; but, as far as diagramming is
concerned, It will be owing to Mr.
Dnrham and not to me. And I would
say, here and now, iilat I seldom, if
ever, was more pleased and profited
by an address at an association thpn I
was with Mr. Durham's at our fast
meeting.
Reed and Kellogg's system was new
to me. The books had been sent me
during vacation, with a request.to ex
amine and recommend if I approved,
but I had not examined them.
After Mr. Corley's excellent and
practical lecture, Mr. Durham took
up that driest of all studies, English
Grammar, and in a very affable man
ner infused more life into it than I had
ever seen before. I adopted it at once,
have been teaching it since, and am
more and more pleased with it.
Mr. Durham is to explain it more
fully at onr next meeting, and as an
assistant, I am willing, if I can add to
the interest, to show its general appli
cation to other studies.
I hope the teachers of the county
will endeavor to be present., as I con
sider Mr: Durham's system of teach
Ing grammar and Mr. Davis' system
of teaching arithmetic very important
aids in teaching.

ry any youig man until the maids are
provided for; or else to piay each of
theni a flue for satisfaction for invad
ing our liberties; and likewise a fine
to be levied on all such bachelors as
shall he married to widows. The
great disadvantage it is to us maids is
that the widows, by their forward
carriage, (10 snap up the young men,
and have the vamaty to think their
merit ,bcyond Ours, which is a great

the preference. This is humbly re

Glenn, assisted by J. E.- Carroll and
Robert T. Rtiggins, attemplted to arr'cst
Isaac Castles, colored, on a warran
sent to tile sheriff of this counity fr'om
Chester. Isaac at first denied hlis
identilty, but' when it was fully estab
lished, he0 drew a Colt's revolver and~
attenmpted to fire at the posse, when
Carroll fired ils pistol at Isaac, in
tlicting a slight wound. He was then
arrested and brought to tis place and
committed to jail.--Yorkville En
guirer.
--Among tihe gifts displayed at a
Sanl Francisco wecddinig was thle bride's
father's check for' $100,000. Tile
cashier of the bank on whlich tihe
check was drawn wa~s a guest. It was
observed that lhe looked queerly at the
document, then turned up hiis nose,
and remarked: "Why he hlasn't $500
to his credit inl our bank."
