.H ELEC.TION EN FAIR.FIELD.
The Democrats Turn Out to a mWan, Funl of
Enthusiasm-The Radical Nogroes Crowd
Certain Boxes, But Are Prevented From
Creating a Disturbance.-A Quiet Election
and a Splendid Democratic Triumph.
The election in Fairfield passed off
as quietly as could be expected, in
view of the fact that party lines were
closely drawn and both sides intent
,upon victory. There were two tickets
in the-field-the straight Demociatic
ticket, printed on pink paper, and a
nongrel concern containing the Re
publican electors, Blythe for Congress,
the so-called Greenback ticket for State
officers, and the negro - ticket .(with
Isaac Miller's name substituted for
Isaac Purcell's) for the Legislature.
In addition to these there were some
tickets containing the Republican elec
tors and the Democratic State ticket
otherwise; also some straight
Democratic tickets printed on white
paper. These two classes of ticktts,
we are informed, were voted to a
large extent by the colored people.
The following is the result of the clec
tion as thus far received:
WINNSBORO.
It was the plan of the Radical load,
ers to concentrate the negroes on ccr
tain boxes, and thus either koop fhe
Democrats from voting their full
strength or cause bloodshed. Antici
pating this, the Democratic voters of
the Winnsboro precinct came early to
the polls in order to get a full vote and
enable colored Democrats to vote with
out molestation. The poll was held
in the Court House, and on one side
the steps were occupied by the Demo
crats, room being left for voters to go
up and vote. The steps on the other
side were used for the voters to come
down after casting their ballots. The
negroes camne at frst in small num
bers, and very few made any attempit
to vote. They waited for their csrowdl
to gather, and for a sufilcient supp)ly
of tickets. The crowdl camne pretty
soon, and by hialf-past eleven o'clock
there were over a thousand negroes
present. The normal colored vole in
this precinct is about six hundred,
and the remainder were made up of
bodies of negroes. w ho should have
voted elsewhere.-at Rlidgeway, Duri
ham's, Gladden's Grove and even
Blythewood and Feasterville. More
lihan four hundred negroes were
thus gathered here with the purpose
of capturing the box and overawing
Democratic voters. About twelve
o'clock there was a general movement
of negroes toward the staircase, and
the press was so great that it was with
difficulty that anybody could get up.
Many Democrats were delayed in vot
ing, and some voters had to be let up
on the other side, to enable them to
cast their ballot. When the pressure
was greatest, some negro (whose name
we have not yet learned) cried out
"Push those men away, and let us g'et
up there." Upon this a strong move
mont was made by the negro mass to
press the Democrats away from their
position, and the entrance was thus so
completely blocked that nobody could
get up. Some time was lost, the une
groes reftising to cease their pressure,
even when requested by Major Wood
ward and assured that they should
have full opportunity to vote. The
voting went on continuously, being
delayed somewhat by the useless crowd
ing of the negroes, and by the proper
questionings of the Democratic chal
lengers. Some of the negroes, we.
learn, did not get to the box,'but this
lb the result of their massing so many
voters here from other precincts. It
was clearly the purpose of the negro
- leaders either to capture the poll or
raise a disturbance. The coolness and
forbearance of the wvhites prevented
both results. The negroes voted most
ly for the Radical-Greenback ticket,
but a large number voted squarely
with the Democrats. A number, too,
were persuaded by the Democratic ral
hiers to vote the ticket headed with the
National Republican candidates for elec
tors. The pressure on the poll by the
Radical negroes gave fine opportuni
ties for electione'erlng, and they were
fluely employed. The utmost good
humor prevailed during the entire
day, and nothing like a disturbance
occurred. The following is the un
omlllal majority at the different boxes:
Horeb, 105; Wlnnsboro, 295: Ridge
way, $69; Oakland, 115; Bear Creek,
241 ; Jenkineville, 9; Gladden's Grove,
187; Yonguesvill, 210; Feasterville
and Mionticello had not reported'up to
the time of going to p~ress, but were all
Democratic. The Greenback ticket
got two votes at Jomnkinsvjlln.
