AGRICULTURB. Li' VILLAUO RSIDaNTS KEEP Cows. -Every fanily on a farm of course keeps one or more cows but we claim that the dwellers In vllages, and very rmany in cities can, and should, each keep a cow. Good milk is the boat of all oia for young children, and It goes a great ways in saving butter bills, and in the preparation of palatable nour ishing food of many varieties. The above actual results show the economy of keeping one's own cow. Two to -five' famillee, according to size and numbers, can readily unite in having one cow kept, dividing the milk and expenses, and thus always have good, pure, rich milk at very moderate cost. The suitable refuse from the kitchens of th'ee or four families would go a good w ay towards reducing the cost of purchased food. In rural villages summer pasturage can be obtained near at hand which with a daily feed of good weal will 1urnish a large supply of rich milk at a low cost. A boy can be secured at a small price to drive the cow to the pasture in the morning, and return her at night to the stable. A stabling or stall can always be obtained at a trifling rent, and be kept clean. There are always plenty of gardeners or farmers who will gladly take the manure away so frequently as to pre vent it being a nuisance, or disagree. able. We have no doubt that all real dents of villages, manufacturing towns etc., can by arrangements like the above, secure aln abundant supply of pure, rich, arosh, healthful mita at less than three cents per quart, and at the same time add greatly to their home comforts, and save the health If not the lives of their little ones. CURING BALKY llOiisKs.-I would prepare myself with a good strap-I want no whip; perhaps he has got a taste of that already, and still lie is master. But some fine day, when I was at peace w ith myself and all around I would hitch him to the buggy, turn Ing his head to the village. lie goes half the way very well indeed ; then ho begins to consider that lie has gone far enough in that direct lon and stops. I step down; lie expects mec to use the whip. lie Is mistaken. As a criminal I treat him on the silent system. I push him back a little out of the way. I show him the strap, putting it tip to his nose. I go to the off side and buckle it to his fore leg, close up to his breast, throwing the other end over lis. shoulder; I then raise lils near foot and fix itwith the hoof nearly touching the belly. This done, I say, "now, old chap, you just stand there." I don't smoke, so I take a paper from ny pocket and finding a place where I can slt down and lie see me, I begin to read. This is something lie did not bargain for, and the novelty of ttanding on three legs somewhat diverts his mind from the cause that stopped himl. I think this is the chief polut to begained and the most humane. When tihe strail Is taken olr I show it to him. cariess him a little, and we move on without Irritation. The strap will now become a part of the harness for a month or two, till at last the aight of it will act as a tallanan. PACKINo Edus.-Tiiere are many ways recoinnended for packig eggs. The idea on which they are all based Is to keep the temperature so low that de composition of the fludts shall not take place, and at the sanm time exclude tibe sit from the shell so that the oxygen can not act upon the content Is. A prep aration once patented was made iI this way: Put Into a tub or vessel one but-hel of quick-lime, two pounlds of salt, hall a pound of cream of tartar; mix wcll toget,.er, wvithi as umuch water as will reduce the composihioai to such a consistence that it it wIll cause ani egg to swIm in i1, witht Its tily just, above the liquid ; then: 11ll ini the eggs. Brushinig the eggs over with a solution of gum-~arabie, and then packing ini dry chiaroal dust, will keel) thiemi qite ma long time. Tnke a board and iertor ate It with holes almiost an Iiich and a half large, and put in t.he eggs smiall end down, and place lit a cool cellar, like shtelves, one above another. The essentilal thinag is to take tihe egga fromi the nests every day, so that tilay wvill be entirely tresh. A coating 01 var nishi, wvax, or lard, ches ka decomposl tion. P'our a gallon of boilIng waiter into twvo quarts of quick-lime aind hall a p~ound or sailt; when cold, iiix in an ounce of cream of tartar. 'iThe next, day put in the eggs, anid let them ie main, keeping them covercd with the solution. SOFT RGOs.-Sonalethines, in spite of every known remedy and prevcntive, certain hens cont inue to drop s.t eggs ; to-day in the nest, or to-morrow ulder the perch the skInny apology is to be found. A valuable hen is rightly re garded as In a bad wvay wvhen she be comes troubiesome In this mannier and not withot just cause is there serIous apprehension of liens becomning weak er and weaker. Bunt then, is tact the faling to be found In weaakniess. A thorouaghly sot ud, hetal thy bird, wihich enjoys her liberty, Iand~ conisequently can find mortar', shells, etc., generally goes to nest aiid deposlt~s a satisfactory offering, 1t is just when the bird or its functions fail that the sheil of the egg fails. For soft eggs I generally find that some kn~owna sttmulatinig food1 is the best remedy. Occasionally Is found a pullet that beglins to ltay soft eggs, and continuies to dlo so. Whent such a fowl is recognized, if' not unu euaally valuable for show or stock, sihe should be killed. Sownio Gnass Smen Thl'le fall is the best time to sow tImothy seed. We have never yet seen: a soll so rIch, or a season so favorable, thtat the exnberuant growth of grass hurt the wheat, as hais been complained of by some farmers. The danger is almnost utniverstally in the other direction. Caoutchanoc dIssolves more or less pier fectly accor'ding to its conadit ion ini va rious liquIds, fixed anad hydrocarbnu oils, chlorotorm, ether and' carboni-di sulphilde. Uniless, however, the caout chouco has been masticated or other wise degonerated,it is doubtful whetiher a true solution is obtainedi. When a clear, limpid solution ia requIred, Onto of the best solvents is that proposed by Payen, namely, carbona-llsulphide, mixed with five per cent, of absolute alcohol. If one part of miatstlcated Ca outchone is dissolved an thirity parts of the above solvent, a soluition is obtained which can be filtered through paper, andl may be employed in coverIng the most dolicbate mould wlth successive layers of eaoutchaouc. It seemsa that the introdnectlona of mag nuets ito the great grain mil of tihe West has fuilfililed the hIghest expecta tions of those who complalau of. wire in wheat. Not only htave tihe magnets capturedi all the stray pIeces of iron bands, andl thus removed thme last and only objection urge- I against wire-band In~g harvesters, bitt they have roveauled the singular fact that, of the scraps of iron and steel which find theIr way to the :wills mIxed with wheat, fully one half are something besides pieces of wire, anad a large proportioan of those are of such a nature aq to be even more dangerous to mill machinery. The miag nets gather every thing of this kind with DOMESTIC. COLD FXsT.-What a common com plaint this is, and yet no one seems to now anything about it. You suffer a from it for years, and yet you don't go I to a doctor, or if you do you derIve very little benefit from his advioe. - Some people suffer from it at night - only, while others are troubled with c it in the daytime as well. It occurs o most frequently in women, but still I you often hear men complain of it. We a belleve that the best remedy Is hypo- U phosphite of lime in one or two grain j doses twice a day. This is soluble in t water, and should be taken in the form a of a mixture, nothing else being put a with it, with the exception, if you 1 like, of a teaspoonful of syrup, to make o it palatable, although it Is really by no a means disagreeable by itself. Another I good remedy is nux vomica-fIlve drops of the tincture in a little water three or four times a day. It is highly re- 1 commended, and you may hope for c great things from it. Then you must p do all you possibly can to Improve the a state of your general health. It is pro- d bable that you are below par somehow A or other, although we must admit that 9 it does not follow of necessity. If you V feel generally out of sorts, and your i appetite is poor, quinine will do you s good. If you are pale and an tenemie y you must put your faith in iron. Cod a liyor oil Is an excellent remedy for Im proving the general nutrition; many people feel quite in a glow after each dose. 110x MAD COURT PLASTUR.-Soak " isinglass in a little warm water for & twenty-four hours; then evaporate nearly all the water by general heat; dissolve the residue in a little diluted alcohol, and strain the whole through a piece of open linen. The stralned mass should be a stiff Jelly when cold. Now stretch a piece or silk or sarsenet on a wooden frame and fix it tight with tacks or 'pack thread. Molt the Jelly and apply it to the silk thinly and evenly with a badger hair brush. A second coating must be applied when the first has dried. When both are dry, apply over the whole surface two or three coatings of balsam of Peru. Plaster thus made is very pliable and never breaks. iTE Government proposus putting a new post office in Pittsburgh, and pur ohased the property between rhird and Fourth streets, fronting on Smithfield and running back to Cherry avenue. The Government sold the buildings on the ground to Mr. Kennedy of Carbo. line fame; he to remove them inside of thirty days. Mr. Kennedy is now doing that, and erecting twenty-five houses in a suburban town called 'Homestead,' of which he (Mr. K.) owns about nine-tenths. Mr. Kennedy is at present employing twenty girls and seven men, besides bookkeeper and printer.
