FARM AND GARDEN. biEP HAksING.-The ul1eet1 indus try in the United tates is vast an important and In the consideratioi of which there are two part ally dis tincti and at the same time in terlookinj interests, Sheep were In early time grown almost solely for their wool, aut with the annual shearing came th< year's income; but in later times, an( aever so prominently as now, the car cass is looked upon as an importan item in sheep husbandry. Mutton as I cheap and acceptable meat has of lat< grown greatly Lin popularity, and muttoi now stands as one of the two importan factors lit the successful raising o aHeep. In view of the fact that tll merino is essentially a wool-producinl breed, with a fleece of the linest an best quality,it Is evident that the pure bloou merino, though it way suppli our manufactories with the materia for the ilines% of woolen goods, on th< other hand cannot satisly the butcher The sheep having to both feed am clothe its keeper, it is an importan question: What is the best breed f bheep to do this? .Evidently not th4 pure-blooded merino. Though the growing of the pure-blooded nerino has its place, and an important one and the demand for their wool indioatei the prosperity of manufacture of th linest goods, it is by the crossing o themi with other breeds in which tki flesh-producing qualities predominat that a sheep best for both meat ant wool is produced. A cross-breed is thq one that in most localities Is to pay The merino iR slow of growth and smal of carcass when mature; but whet crossed with a rapid grower, one thal matures early, Is a high feeder, an1 lays on flsh rapidly, but not remark. able for its wool either In quantity 01 quality, a sheep is obtained that payi for Itself in its wool of prime quality 1 and furnishes agood quantity of muttor as a profit. of such ch.iracter are thi crosses of the merino, with the Cots wol and the South-down. But wit the great mass of American sheep o the Western plains, wool is the impor tant produot, and here the cross mus1 be with the merino upon the "native' -a race of sheep which has grown ou1 of a variety of early importations t< this country-an intercrossing of vari. ous breeds in which many of the goo( pointe have been lost. in this field th4 merino has a great work to do to ralsi the yleid of wool one, two, or mon poinds per head, and give It a highl0 value. * Cur Fi.owna,-The following hints though containing nothing novel, ar apt to be forgotten by those who 11 timnier cull the choicest flowers fo house decoration : Flowers dec'iy muel sooner when tied in bunches than wheo arranged loosely.
