Mr. John Broome has brought to
our office some unusually large and
flue peppers. They are good things
to make food savory, and Mr. Broome's
are decidedly among the fiuest speci
mens we have ever seen.
There is no dodbt that tihe negrocs
in this county are actively engaged in
preparing for a fight in November.
Secret meethigs are being held, and
the leaders are very busy. A meeting
was held in "Wirick Town" on Satur
day-that day being selected because
the Democrats were busy with their
second primary. Joe Thomnpsona is
busy among his followers-doing all
he can to stir up strife between the
races. The other aegro politicians'are
likewise at work, and they all mean
mischief, In this state of things, the
Democracy must prepare to meet the
Radical enemy, and erush them com
pletely.-We have th1is to say to Joe
Thompson and the other Radical lead
ers in thuis county: They tare doinug all
they can to cause - strife-it naay be
bloodshed- among our people, and
thmey amust expect to bear thec responsi
bility. The peace of this county is too

A SAD ACom DENT.--On Wedlnesdaty
afternoona Mr. Jaames G. Caldwell, a
well knoewn citizern of this counaty,
. while ridbng hmoame fromr Winnsboro01. in
hsis buggy, maet with ana alccidenit. wvhicha
resulted in hais deatha. ills horse took
frighat, from the breaking ofta por tion
of the harnaess, ran somne distance and
overturned the buggy, throwing Mr.
Caldwell, with a negro boy driving
him, violently ona the groumnd. Mr.
Gldwell was at once taken to his
hmome and died about a half-hour after
reaching there-before the physiciaan,
.who was promptly summonied, could
reach him. Mr. Caldwell was about
eighty years of age, and had spenat the
larger pbortion of his life -in this coun
ty. He was born in Treland, but came
to Fairfield whena about three years
old. Hie was A clerk for sonme time in
Charleston, and was afterwards en
gaged lam mercantile business inm Co
lumbia. lie then removed to Rocky
Mount, where lhe resided up to the day
of his death. Hie married a dauaghter
of the late Stepheni Gibson, and reared
a large family. Mr. Caldwell was a
gentleman of the huighaest character,
and enjoyed durinag all Ils life the fill
confidence of those among whom he
lived, lie was especially remarkable
for his constant industry-continuIng
to the very last the mnanagemenat of his
business, though for some years al
most a helpless cripple. He was for
some .years a magistrate unader the
antd-bellum government, and filled the
office with fidelity anad efflciency. He
has left to his desecendants a naame that
they may wvell honor, and a character
that all may emulate. -
